Obituary
James (Jimmy) Bassett, age 57, of Barefoot Bay, FL & formerly of Danbury, CT,
passed away on August 20, 2014, after fighting end stage heart disease for
over 14 years.
Jimmy was born in Danbury, CT on September 20th, 1956. He graduated from
Danbury High School and attended Western CT State University. Jimmy was
married to his wife Sue Sheehan Bassett on Thanksgiving Eve on November 23rd
1988; they were married for over 25 years.
Jimmy worked as a printer since high school but the highlight of his
professional career was the time he spent working for New Fairfield Press,
which became his second family, especially when he first became ill 14 years
ago. After moving to Florida, Jimmy no longer officially worked but he did
manage to put 453,000 miles on Sue's 2010 Ford Fusion, and as a result met
many special people along the way!
During his spare time Jimmy enjoyed his beloved New York Yankees, New York
Giants & NY Jets. Thanks to the influence of his late In-laws, Marge & Bob,
he also became a fanatic Lady UCONN Huskies Fan! But, the sport he adored the
most was NASCAR! For many years he & his wife Sue went to as many as 10
NASCAR races a year with the highlight being when he was a guest of Bristol
Motor Speedway for the Food City 250 on August 26, 2000. Sue will especially
miss Jimmy on Memorial Day when together they would watch racing starting
with The Monaco Formula 1 Race, followed by The Indy 500 & ending their
racing day with The Coke 600!
In addition to his wife Sue, Jimmy is survived by his brother Glen Bassett &
sister-in-law Beth of Brewster, MA, his sister Lori Hubina & brother in-law
Paul of Newtown, his sister Wendy Weyer of Danbury and his sister Allison
Sagnelli of Brookfield, his sister-in-law Maureen Hoock of St. Louis, MO, his
sister-in-law Eileen McCann of Trumbull & his brother-in-law Terry Sheehan of
Trumbull. He also held a special place in his heart for his nieces & nephews
including Dr. Michael McCann of Hamden, Brendan McCann of Port Jefferson
Station, NY, Coleen McLaughlin of Trumbull, Josh Weyer of New Milford, Nick,
Mike & Matt Weyer of Danbury, Kelly Sagnelli of Danbury and Baylee & Frank
Sagnelli of Brookfield, Steven Hubina of New York, New York, Grace Carpenter
of Southbury and Janis & Andrew Hubina of Newtown, Chelsea Stranger & Emily
Bassett of Brewster, MA. He was also very excited when he became a Great
Uncle to Avery & Mason Keeler of Danbury and Logan & Andrew McLaughlin of
Trumbull. Last but not least, Jimmy was also a devoted Dad to his furry kids
Blue, Chez, Taco & Midnight.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents Jim & Grace Bassett formerly of
Danbury & his in-laws Marge & Bob Sheehan formerly of Trumbull and his
beloved pets Dudley, Awesome, Horace, Max, Maxine, Rocco & Nacho.
A Celebration of his life will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main
Street Danbury on Monday August 25th from 4pm until 6pm, with a prayer
service to take place at 6pm. His cremated remains will be scattered
privately by his family in some very special places at a late date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Breast Friends of
Florida, 1103 Hibiscus Blvd. Suite 405, Melbourne, FL 32901 or The Humane
Society Vero Beach & Indian River County P.O. Box 644 Vero Beach, FL 329610644.
Jimmy's family wishes to thank The Micco Fire Department who responded to the
911 call & worked tirelessly trying to say his life and the staff of The

as a Gunnery Sergeant 1rst Division. For most of his life, Mr. Bassett's
career revolved around masonry and construction; ironically, just as he would
build structures, he also built lasting friendships and helped structure his
other love---the church. A leader who followed great leadership, Mr. Bassett
served in various local, state and regional roles including One Church, One
Child; served as Past District President of for West Coast AME Conference Lay
Organization, and Steward & Lay Board at St. Luke AME and later Bethel AME.
In each position Mr. Bassett served diligently and faithfully. Survived by
wife of 58 years, Coretha; daughter, Lori (Tarik); 2 grandchildren, Tariq and
Talia; a sister, Florence; 3 sisters-in-law, Joyce, Harriet (Mitchelin),
Eleara (Gerald); nephew, Robert (Lila); godson, Joseph "Jay" (Tiffany);
friends, Howard (Bernadette) and Henry (Mary); cherished cousins, nieces,
nephews, and a host of caring friends and neighbors. The remains will repose

The Celebration of Life for Mr. Herbert H. Bassett who passed away on Friday,
January 11, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital will be held on Saturday, January
19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2709
North 25th Street, Tampa, FL 33605, Reverend Ronald Williams, Pastor;
Reverend A. Randolph Jerald, Officiant; and Reverend Marcus Burke, Jr.,
Eulogist. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
Mr. Bassett was born to the union of Eugene & Colious Bassett in Melbourne,
Florida on January 11, 1932. He was the second oldest of three children. Mr.
Bassett received his education through the Hillsborough County School System.
He would later complete his studies at Don Thompson after completing a tour
of duty with the United States Army, serving bravely during the Korean
conflict as a Gunnery Sergeant1rst Division.
After completing his tour of duty, he returned to the Tampa Bay area; he
married the love of his life, the former Coretha Jordan; and that union
produced their only child and the apple of his eye, Lori Eugenia. Mr. Bassett
loved family, friends and fashion--- he was known for looking as if he had
just leaped from the pages of a fashion magazine. The word “debonair” paled
to describe his commanding presence and sense of style.
For most of his life, Mr. Bassett’s career revolved around masonry and
construction; ironically, just as he would build structures, he also built
lasting friendships and helped structure his other love---the church.
A leader who followed great leadership, Mr. Bassett served in various local,
state and regional roles including One Church, One Child; served as Past
District President of for West Coast AME Conference Lay Organization, and
Steward & Lay Board at St. Luke AME and later Bethel AME. In each position
Mr. Bassett served diligently and faithfully.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister, Eugenia “Jewel”
Dozier; and his brother, Charles Bassett.
Mr. Bassett leaves to celebrate his life, filled with great memories and
special moments, a loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Coretha; a devout
daughter, Lori (Tarik) Sharrieff and two very endearing grandchildren, Tariq
and Talia Sharrieff. He also leaves a sister, Florence Bassett Darius; three
sisters-in-law, Joyce Williams, Harriet (Mitchelin) Holder and Eleara
(Gerald) Campbell; one devoted nephew, Robert (Lila) Dowling; his godson,
Joseph “Jay” (Tiffany) Wilson; two devoted friends, Howard (Bernadette)
Pierce of Tampa, FL and Henry (Mary) Hepburn of South Carolina, along with
his cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of caring friends and
neighbors.
The remains will repose after 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2013, at Ray
Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue.

High School Cartoonist Loses Censorship Battle
WASHINGTON (AP) – The cartoonist of a high school newspaper in nearby
northern Virginia has resigned because the paper refused to publish a drawing
bitterly criticizing reckless student driving.
It has been scheduled to appear in the newspaper of Fairfax County’s
Langley High School last Friday along with an editorial on the subject and a
tribute to a Langley student who was killed last month in an automobile
accident during school hours.
The cartoonist, Brian Bassett, 17, refused to change the cartoon, which
depicted five students picking up a black-clad, sickle-carrying grim reaper as
a hitchhiker. He also refused to change the caption: “Hop in .. we’re just
killing time till next class.”
“Basically I was doing humorous editorials, but death is a strong issue
and I wanted the cartoon to have impact,” said Bassett, the son of a ScrippsHoward newspapers cartoonist, Gene Bassett.
John Bussey, 18, editor of the paper, said that after a close vote of the
staff and considerable soul-searching, he decided to ask Bassett to change the
drawing because it would not be in good taste along with a memorial to Patricia
Collier, 17, the student who was killed.
“The cartoon was excellently done,” he said, “but it could be taken the
wrong way by a segment of the school who knew Patty, and by her family.”
Huldah Clark, an English and journalism teacher who serves as faculty
adviser to the tabloid paper, described the cartoon as “too personal, too soon
and too strong,” adding: “It wasn’t a right or wrong situation. There were good
points on both sides, but here were reservations that the cartoon might be
taken too personally.”

Brian Basset was born on November 30, 1957; he has one brother and one older sister. Gene
Basset, their father, was a sports, theatrical and editorial cartoonist for over 40 years, retiring in 1993.
Needless to say, the young Basset picked up cartooning skills early, beginning to draw cartoons as
early as kindergarten and then into high school for his school newspaper. He attended two years of
the Fine Arts program at Ohio State University and continued his cartooning in The Lantern, the
student newspaper. Skipping the third year at university, Basset tried a 6-month stint as political

began.
The Basset family of Brian, Linda and teenage sons Keegan and Trevor live in Issaquah,
Washington with five cats and a golden retriever-border collie-mix pooch named Reeses. Brian is a
dedicated animal supporter and participates in events such as the Bark Ball in Washington, DC in

Samuel B. Bassett, labor lawyer, died
Samuel B. Bassett, 75, of 2621 Magnolia Lane W., a prominent labor lawyer
for many years, died Saturday after a long illness.
At his request there were no services. There was cremation.
A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Bassett came here in 1920. He graduated
from the University of Washington Law School in 1924. During the late 1920s he
became a law partner with the late George Vanderveer, known as “counsel for the
dammed,” who represented unions.
In the early 1930s, Mr. Bassett began representing the Teamsters Union
and later the Retail Clerks Union. He also represented several other unions for
many years.
Mr. Bassett established that unions have the right of collective
bargaining as a matter of common law. He also was instrumental in many labor
laws for the unions. In 1968 both labor and management and members of the
judiciary honored him for his work.
Mr. Bassett was a senior partner in the firm of Bassett, Donaldson &
Hafer. He was a member of the American, Washington State and Seattle-King
County Bar Associations, the College Club and the Masons. He was an Army
veteran of World War I.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; a son, Stephen S. Bassett, Woodinville,
two daughters, Mrs. Don Coutts, Marina Del Rey, Calif., and Mrs. Todd Smavely,
Torrance, Calif., and two half sisters, Mary and Estelle Bassett, and a half
brother, Harry Bassett, all of Washington, D.C.
