Background to ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ The British evacuation began on Friday 1 September 1939: “Operation Pied Piper”. There were three major evacuations in preparation for the German Luftwaffe bombing. By January 1940 almost 60% had returned to their homes. A second evacuation effort was started after the Germans had taken over most of France. From June 13th to June the 18th 1940, around 100,000 children were evacuated. The reason why most children were evacuated to the country side was because the Germans were bombing the cities and this was endangering the children and, as the parents feared for them, they were sent by train or were shipped off to a safe place. Why Hitler started WW2 In revenge for Germany’s defeat in WW1 and to conquer large new territories for the German people to live in. The people who were there first were enslaved or exterminated. Hitler wanted to create the ultimate race of humans. He blamed everything on the Jews.
