UNIVERSITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON Job Description POST: Graduate Design Engineer LOCATION: Denios Ltd, Newport. Shropshire GRADE: 24 month fixed term contract – KTP associate Salary £21,000 to £25,000 ESTABLISHMENT NUMBER: 1. Organisational Chart Reports to: Graham Oakes Post holder: Graduate Design Engineer 2. Contacts Internal: Academic staff, Business Solutions administrative staff, support services staff External: Denios management team and staff, owners, directors and senior managers in small, medium and large companies that are Denios customers, suppliers to Denios 3. Personal Specification The successful candidate will be required to both develop design solutions, and manage the embedding of 3D CAD systems into the company. Additional technical challenges are to investigate and offer solutions to: Potential light-weighting of large cabinets while retaining integral strength and security New bonding technologies to replace existing and expensive welding of cabinets The potential of designing novel ways of preparing large cabinets for tranportation The post holder will need to be a confident communicator with highly developed written, oral and presentation skills and be able to liaise effectively with a range of internal and external contacts, including major customers and local manufacturers providing services to Denios. They will need to be able to communicate technical knowledge to both technical and nontechnical staff. They will need to show some leadership skills as they will need to have the drive to manage this project through to a successful conclusion – while remaining sympathetic to the business demands of working in a manufacturing company. A good first degree (1st or 2.1) in mechanical engineering or closely related subject is essential, and relevant experience of using 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred) is also an essential, and will be tested at interview. Work experience in a manufacturing, production or product design environment would also be an advantage, as would the ability to use and understand FEA software. Denios is a German owned company and it is expected that the successful candidate will be able to travel within the UK and internationally as the project demands. 4. Budget As assigned by the conditions of the project 5. Purpose of the Post The purpose of the post is to complete the KTP project which aims to introduce design and engineering capability into the UK operations of Denios, bringing improved knowledge of 3D CAD, product design, product optimisation, light-weighting, new materials, and research on the latest bonding technologies that could be applied to bond large environmental cabinets. 6. Main Duties and Responsibilities The major steps in the KTP project over 24 months will be: 1. Review of existing environmental storage system designs currently produced 2. Benchmarking of current range against key competitors. Establishment of Common Design Features and Constraints 3. Generation of Preliminary Storage System Design Concepts & Data 4. Generic 3D Concept Generation and introducing FEA 5. Feasibility study to evaluate current metal joining technologies and options for introduction into new system designs 6. Design Review & Consolidation, introducing design for disassembly and reassembly 7. Storage System Prototyping & Testing 8. Static Test & Design Review 9. On site assembly testing, prototyping and modification 10. Analysis of On-site / In service testing results 11. Design Progression & roll out 12. Value Added Options 13.
