The purpose of the course is to ameliorate the students’ language ability by reinforcing the four major skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the target language. There is an emphasis on vocabulary and grammar acquisition. Students will interact with authentic materials such as short films, recorded music, articles, poetry, literature excerpts, music, cultural and computer activities. A vital goal is to develop students’ ability to communicate orally. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Communication: Students will meet or exceed the requirements put forth in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages for Intermediate mid to intermediate high levels of communication in a language other than English o Students communicate using a number of isolated vocabulary words and phrases o Students hear and are encouraged in the correct pronunciation of vocabulary and phrases Cultures: Gain knowledge and understanding of French speaking cultures through their products and perspectives of that culture. Connections: Students make connections and enhance their learning of other disciplines through their study of the French language. Students consider other points of view as they study concepts in context. Comparisons: Compare their first language (English) and cultural with that of French speaking cultures Communities: Students use what they learn in French class outside of the classroom. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Teacher lecture and modeling Reading Use of short films Class discussions WORK REQUIRED BY THE STUDENT: Students are required to complete written assignments, participate in classroom discussion, and complete on-line assignments and projects. Students will speak French as much as possible during class time. EVALUATION OF STUDENT PROGRESS: Various evaluations include, but are not limited to, class participation, oral & written evaluations, vocabulary tests and quizzes, and comprehensive Leçon test at the conclusion of each leçon. Supplementary material may include excerpts from French novels as well as current topics from francophone news sources.
