Application for Environmental Sustainability Reserve (Green Fund) Applications must be received by February 25, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. Please send completed proposal applications to Liana Skibbie, Environmental Sustainability Director, UW-L Student Association at: skibbie.lian@uwlax.edu You will be sent a confirmation e-mail verifying that the proposal was received. Include the following with this application: At least 3 price comparisons of the item(s) or project. Budget Sheet Other supporting documentation (if needed). Contact Information: Name: Rob Schneider Phone: E-mail: Unit/Organization/Department: RHAC/Student Association Please give a brief overview of the proposal. For what items or project are you requesting funding? What would be the approximate cost? I would like to request funding for 10 HAWS/Brita Hydration Stations. These Hydration Stations are hands-free and automatically sense and fill any kind of water bottles, eliminating the need for single-use plastic water bottles. These Hydration Stations would be placed in Angell, Coate, Drake, Laux, Reuter, Sanford, Wentz, and White Hall, Cartwright Center, and Mitchell Hall. Hutch Hall would be excluded due to already having one installed. The approximate cost would be $18,354.60, with installation to be done by Res Life and University Centers staff. What is the general timeline for the project? (When do you see this being on campus?) If approved, the Hydration Stations would be installed this semester if possible, otherwise, over the summer before next year. Is this project typically funded through the budget of another entity/group/department? YES X NO Has this proposal been submitted to other funding sources? YES X NO If yes, please attach a list of the other sources of funding that you have applied for. State whether or not funding was received. If funding was denied please state the reason. What is the environmental impact of this project? Would it reduce the carbon footprint at UW-L? Please be as specific as possible. The environmental impact of this project could be quite big. The manufacturer’s website says that one Hydration Station could reduce consumption of up to 36,000 16.9oz. plastic water bottles. The station installed in Hutch has a counter to show how many water bottles have been saved- and the one station alone has saved 26,558 plastic water bottles after being installed about a year ago. Over ten more stations, these Hydration Stations could potentially save the waste from a quarter-million plastic water bottles per year. Hydration Stations also contribute one point towards LEED Certification. Plastic water bottles are also a petroleum product. Saving water bottles conserves the use of this finite resource. How will this project increase student understanding of environmental issues or actions? I think that the counter on the Hydration Stations will show how big of an impact the Hydration Stations are making. We will be able to better discuss the impact of plastic water bottles (and plastic in general) as well as be able to better focus on not using water bottles. Hydration Stations would be placed in high-traffic areas, where lots of students would have access to them. Their visibility and accessibility should lead to high usage. Do you plan to collaborate with other entities? This can be in the funding, planning or execution the project through student or community organizations, university departments, etc. If approved, this fund request would require collaboration with the Office of Residence LifeFacilities and University Centers for installation. Is there any other relevant information that you would like to add? I believe that this project would help us decrease our use of plastic water bottles and increase our discussion of the impacts of plastic water bottles. If approved, I would also be interested in submitting a similar proposal next year for Eagle Hall. Due to still being under construction, it didn’t fit into the proposed timeline for installation. Also, attached to the this request should be the specification sheets for the Hydration Station and 8-Gallon Water Chiller.
