Job Description and Person Specification Vacancy number: 034211FP Job Description Academic Unit: Electronics and Computer Science Post Title: Teaching Fellow Career Pathway and Level: ERE Category ERE TAE MSA CAO 4 Academic Posts Academic Research Non-Academic Posts Teaching Enterprise x Education Development Post Responsible to (and Level): Head of ECS Posts Responsible for (and Level): Levels 2 and 3 Technical Staff supporting the ECS laboratories Job Purpose: To be responsible for undergraduate and taught postgraduate laboratory work associated with Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, to teach courses/ modules in the laboratory and to participate in ECS administration. Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum) 1. To actively participate in the teaching objectives of ECS by managing and engaging in a range of contributions to the practical aspects of the education programme. To develop, monitor, evaluate and revise teaching laboratory exercises and collaborate with course and module leaders to ensure excellence and teaching coherence. To plan, develop and implement innovative contributions to learning, teaching and assessment methods within the laboratories, to teach courses/ modules in the laboratory, (e.g. modules such as ELEC1029, ELEC1030, ELEC2024 etc). % Time 50 2. To organise the timetabling of the laboratory sessions and to ensure that each session is suitably staffed with academics, teaching assistants and postgraduate research students. To be responsible for and allocate resources associated with the associated budgets e.g. postgraduate demonstrators, laboratory consumables etc. 10 3. To act as a supervisor and examiner of MSc and/or undergraduate projects within the appointee’s field of technical interests. 10 4. To line manage the associated technical staff who have responsibilities for the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching laboratory work. To ensure that appropriate appraisals/personal performance development reviews are undertaken at regular intervals as required by the University. 5 5. To liaise with the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus (USMC) team to ensure consistent delivery of teaching laboratory exercises and working practices at both campuses. 5 6. To work closely and in conjunction with the current Senior Tutor with a view to assuming this role over time. 5 7. To advise and assist students on a variety of practical activities, which are closely associated with their undergraduate/postgraduate coursework (e.g. final year projects, group design projects and design exercises). 5 8. To contribute to the efficient management and administration of ECS by performing personal administrative duties as allocated by the Head and by taking on appropriate Academic Unit coordinating roles. 5 9. To be responsible for the management of the teaching/laboratory duties of the recipients of ECS Mayflower scholarships. 5 Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships) Member of the ECS Board, Examination Board and of such ECS committees relevant to your administrative duties. New appointees will be assigned a senior colleague to guide their development and aid their integration into ECS and the University and will be expected to undertake appropriate training. Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Head of ECS or the Deputy Head (Education), within the context of the teaching programmes agreed by Faculty Programme Committee. May occasionally be required to collaborate with colleagues in other institutions on original teaching and learning practice. 2 Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience: All by application, interview and references A degree or equivalent professional qualification and experience in electronic or electrical engineering PhD in electronic or electrical engineering or equivalent knowledge and skills. Detailed understanding and knowledge of circuit design and construction Knowledge of EDA tools Teaching qualification (PCAP or equivalent) Membership of Higher Education Academy Track record of design and implementation of printed circuit boards. Experience of developing laboratory experiments for undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes. Demonstrated success in delivering learning outcomes Involvement in national events Significant experience within electronic and electrical engineering Experience of computer programming Planning and Organising: Proven ability to plan and develop a range of high quality teaching activities. Proven ability to work closely with senior colleagues and students to ensure delivery of practical learning outcomes associated with electronics, electrical engineering and computer science.
