6th GRADE ELECTIVES
OPTION 1: EXPLORATORY WHEEL
The Exploratory Wheel is an electives class option that is composed of various subjects which meet for
approximately 9 weeks each. Students in the exploratory wheel rotate throughout the different courses
during the school year. Courses offered may include the following: (Subject to change pending availability
and budgetary constraints.)
Beginning Art:
Students will be introduced to beginning art skills including using basic tools and art vocabulary. They will
be encouraged to acquire new artistic skills through this hands-on activity class. Color and theory will be
explored and students will learn about primary, secondary, cool, and warm colors. Mediums used include
pencil, color pencil, ink, paint, collage, watercolors, and more. There will be an emphasis on exploration
through the creation of an art portfolio.
Ceramics:
Students will be introduced to beginning ceramics. They will learn how to hand build pinch pots, coil pots,
slab containers and ice cream mugs. All projects will be glazed and fired and are all food safe.
Homemaking
Emphasis will be placed on learning self development, relationships with others, caring for one's self and
making nutritional choices. Special units will be taught on sewing and culinary arts experience.
Introduction to sewing will include basic sewing machine operation. Instruction in culinary arts will include
learning how to follow a recipe, accurate measurement, and working as a kitchen team.
OPTION 2: MUSIC
This option is for students who wish to take a music class instead of the Exploratory Wheel. Prior
instrumental music experience is not required for participation in the music program.
Band
Band is open to continuing students who have participated in the Music Program at Elementary School,
or students who have never played an instrument and wish to learn. Band participates in three to four
concerts each year. There may be some time commitment to out of school practices as well as
performance time.
Orchestra
Orchestra is open to continuing students who have participated in the Music Program at Elementary
School, or students who have never played an instrument and wish to learn. Orchestra participates in
three to four concerts each year. There may be some time commitment to out of school practices as well
as performance time.
