Information for “Meet the Livestock Breeds” presenters Thank you for your interest! “Meet the Livestock Breeds” was developed to educate the public further about the livestock they see in the ring. Your presentation will help us make it a regular part of the Fair’s schedule of events! How it works: Like a showmanship or fitting class, you and your animal (whether it be cow, goat, sheep, etc.) will be “on display” in the show ring at all times. When it is your turn to present, you will move to the presentation station at the front of the ring. An assistant will be available to hold the microphone, your animal, poster, etc. as you wish. Once you have completed your presentation, please ask for questions. **Repeat the question before answering.** The facilitator will tell you when to wrap up. Please thank the audience and then move back to your original position. When all presentations are complete, we will invite the audience into the show ring. Please stay with your animal until the audience leaves. Eligibility: Your 4-H project animal is obviously eligible to participate in “Meet the Livestock Breeds.” However, it must be comfortable with people, children, noise, etc. Animal Health: If you have not already filed them with your entry forms, you will need to bring with you any health certifications ordinarily required for showing your animal at the Fair. Presentation: You may choose to make a poster with pertinent information, but this is totally optional. There will be easels available should you decide to do this. You will have about 5 minutes to cover the following points: 1. Introduce yourself and your animal (names, club, years in 4-H). 2. What is the animal’s breed and country of origin? How far back does this breed’s origins stretch? (i.e. How old is this breed?) 3. What was the original purpose of the breed? 4. How does the breed’s history affect its personality and characteristics? (care, attitude, etc.) 5. Fun facts about the breed. 6. Fun facts about your specific animal. Is your animal “true to type” (a good example of the breed)? What makes your animal special? (Quirks, etc) What to wear: Your 4-H uniform (tan bottom, white top, 4-H emblem) What to bring: ** Leadrope, treats, etc—anything you need to keep your animal standing in place while others are presenting and while the audience is in the ring Your visual posters, if you would like to talk about them/use them in your presentation Grooming tools, if you would like to talk about your animal’s/the breed’s special requirements or grooming routine **I think most or all of you will be using animals that live on the fairgrounds during fair week. So things that are normally suggested for the dog kids don’t apply here, especially cause we are accepting such a wide variety of animals. Because of this, bring whatever you need, and contact me at livlane.baker15@gmail.com if you have any questions. Schedule: The length of the program will be influenced by the number of 4Hers who participate. It will probably last between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on participants and length of the audience ‘meet and greet’ portion. The length of each presentation, the number of questions presenters answer, and the length of the audience ‘meet and greet’ can be adjusted to accommodate more or fewer presenters.
