5.
Sub-
6.

I.
Read Exercise 7 of your lab manual.
You are responsible for all of the introductory material and Activity I (except the
Nails), Activity 3, and Activity 6.
Complete “Basic Structures of the Skin” and “Accessory Organs of the Skin” of
the Review Sheet following the Exercise.
II.
Be able to identify the following layers of the skin on the model and on the microscope
slides of thick (palmar) or thin skin:
A.
Epidermis – keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
1.
Stratum corneum
2.
Stratum lucidum (only in thick skin)
3.
Stratum granulosum
4.
Stratum spinosum
5.
Stratum basale
B.
Dermis – irregular connective tissue
1.
Papillary layer + dermal papillae
2.
Reticular layer
E.
Hypodermis (subcutaneous layer) with adipose tissue
III.
On the model and/or microscope slides, be able to identify:
A.
Hair, hair papilla, hair shaft, hair follicle, arrector pili muscle, sebaceous glands –
only in thin skin on model and slides
B.
Melanocytes with dark-colored melanin – in stratum basale
C.
Meissner’s corpuscle (on model in dermal papillae - touch) and Pacinian
corpuscle (lamellated corpuscle for deep pressure- on model in dermis)
D.
Eccrine sweat glands – on model
E.
Apocrine sweat glands – model (underarm section)
IV.
Know the functions of arrector pili, sebaceous glands, eccrine and apocrine sweat glands,
Meissner’s corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, melanocytes
V.
Know how thin skin differs from thick skin
1.
Thick skin has extra layer of epidermis – stratum lucidum
2.
Thick skin has much thicker stratum corneum
3.
Thick skin has much more prominent dermal papillae
4.
Thick skin only in palms of hands and soles of feet
5.
No hair or associated structures in thick skin (sebaceous glands and arrector pili)
6.
No melanin in thick skin
VI.
Hair comparisons
Demonstration - microscope slide (wet mount) to compare the following types of hair:
A.
Brown terminal hair
B.
White hair – has air-filled shaft
C.
Blond hair (if available)
D.
Vellus hair
