PRIMROSE FAMILY - Trunch History

PRIMROSE FAMILY
Early records
Members of the Primrose family were living in Trunch and surrounding villages from
Medieval times. They farmed and owned property and were so famous that a road in the
village is named after them.
15th. Century
As far as Trunch is concerned William Primerose was on the Manor Jury for Trunch in
1493 and Peter Prymerose was on the Court Roll in the same year.
Also in the 1400s Thomas Prymerose was accused of obstructing a lane between Trunch
and the Bromholme Priory.
16th Century
John Primerose paid the subsidy tax in Trunch in 1597 and Prymeroses - Margaret,
Thomas, and Robert are mentioned in the Parish records
17th. Century
Thomas Primrose paid the hearth tax in 1664 and Primroses John, Robert, Mary, Richard,
Samuel, John and William are mentioned in parish records.
18th Century
Several Primrose families appear in the records including William who married Ann
Worts and had children Mary and John in the 1730s and Mary who married Augustine
Postle from North Walsham and had children Mary and Augustine in the 1750s. There
was also a William who married Frances and had children - Elizabeth, Frances and
Josepha.
However it is after the marriage of William Primrose (born in Sidestrand in 1756) to
Ann Mason in 1791 that the line in Trunch becomes easier to follow. Michael and Wendy
Bird say that this William started the Trunch Brewery in 1803. William and Ann had
several children including Ann C in 1793, Hannah in 1794, and William in 1796.
William Primrose Senior (1796-1882) appears on the Electoral Register in Trunch from
1832, qualifying by holding Freehold land and property in Mundesley Road and the
Census shows him as a major landowner in the village, married to Harriet Cremer and
having children - Harriet, William Ann, Henry, Philip, Robert, Sophia, Elizabeth, Charles,
James, and Alfred. In 1851 he farmed 660 acres and employed 42 labourers, describing
himself as landed proprietor, brewer and farmer. He is also recorded as supplying bricks
for the Gimingham Workhouse.
Living in Ivy Farmhouse (The Rookery) and then the White House (see agricultural
buildings page) the properties were large enough to entertain visitors and to employ
several servants. As time went on the farm land was given to sons William Junior, Henry,
Alfred and Robert and Philip was given the brewery which he ran until his death. James
trained as a solicitor and was in London in 1871 and 1881 with a wife Jane and daughter
Constance giving as his occupation “living on a small income from father”. Charles was
lodging in Trunch in 1861 and in 1871 was living in St. Saviour in Norwich with his
uncle Robert Rolfeleremer and his family. He probably died in 1880 but is not buried in
Trunch.
William Primrose Junior(1821-1888) became the major farmer in Trunch alongside his
father until they both died in the 1880s. William Junior had married Ann Hayn and they
had children - Maria, Lucy, Marion, William Hayn, and Walter. In 1891 Walter was
briefly farming in Trunch but then moved away and William Hayne also moved to
Norwich.
Meanwhile William Junior’s siblings - Robert never married and died soon after his father,
Henry married Eleanor Roper and farmed in Gimingham, while retaining property in
Trunch. Alfred married Frances and lived at the Limes in Chapel Road and farmed in
Trunch until his death in 1895.
1911 only Frances, Alfred’s widow & sons left in the village.
Last child of William senior - Elizabeth never married and died aged 84 in 1915. She is
buried in Trunch churchyard.
Later graves in new cemetery post 1936 - Alfreds children & grandchildren?
Re: William on the electoral role who was living in Norwich. I think he was Henry &
Eleanor’s son, born in Gimingham. He is on the Norwich register as well. 1885-87 at 22
Park Lane & 1891-93 at 114 Unthank Road.

1831 Times 28 July. At Norwich on July 26 Robert NEAL was indicted for setting fire
to the stacks of Mr PRIMROSE a farmer at Trunch. The only evidence to connect the
prisoner with the offence was that of his being seen coming in a direction leading from
the fire which broke out about the same time; but he was not near enough to afford any
inference of his having been at the stacks. He had been heard to say the day before that
“Primroses stacks would soon be all of blaze” He was acquitted but sentenced to 7 years
transportation for a felony of which he had been previously convicted.
