Acute care therapy provides all aspects of PT/OT/ST services throughout each nursing unit in the
hospital. We have a very diverse population of patients: Critical care unit (38 beds),
Orthopedics/Neuro Surgery Unit, Oncology/Bariatric Surgery Unit, Cardiac Unit, Pulmonary/Renal
Unit, Medical/Neuro Unit, and Gero-Pysch Unit. Physical Therapy also provides wound care to
some degree but not a high volume amount.
What makes our department special?
Our department is a diverse group, meaning lots of seasoned staff with multiple years experience in
the acute setting with a small mix of new graduates. We are a Team oriented department. Easy to
say that but the staff truly care about each other and it shows in many ways. We not only strive to
provide excellent service to our patients but we also take care of each other like family.
As the manager, things that I feel are crucial in the success of our department:
o
New hire orientation: I feel that if we don’t provide a thorough orientation, how we could
expect the employee to be successful.
o
Communication is a must from many levels. Staff meetings 2x/month. One on one meeting
with Manager or Therapy coordinator monthly with staff.
Listening to staff members
questions/concerns, relationship building, mentoring, reviewing performance, discussing
departmental goals.
o
Motto: Always doing what is right for the patient. Treating patients as if it was your family
member.
o
Explaining expectations and holding staff accountable to those expectations.
o
My goal is to be as fair as possible. Problem solving includes staff involvement, not just
what I think it should be.
o
Employee and Patient Satisfaction are a 1st priority to me. Doing the best we can in
hiring the right fit for the department and for the applicant are important to me.
