RTV SILICONE LUBRICANT DISPERSION PN 40097 DESCRIPTION Applied’s PN 40097 is a solution containing 30% active silicone ingredients in mixed aliphatic and isopropanol solvents. It was designed as a substitute for Dow corning MDX4-4159. The dispersion can be easily applied from dilute solvent solutions and cures on air exposure at room temperature to form an invisible coating that adheres to metal and plastics for lubricity on surfaces. PN 40097 is designed for use in lubricating non-porous surfaces of virtually any shape and using coating processes such as dipping, spraying, wiping or brushing. It is an excellent lubricant for cutting edges. It can be used on razor blades, scalpels, hypodermic needles and other applications where the partially cured cohesive silicone coating is required. For most applications, the resultant coating is more durable than simple polydiemthylsiloxane. After evaporating the solvent, the silicone forms a thin, wax-like coating. The product is supplied as a one part dispersion xylene, an aromatic solvent. It can be diluted with an aliphatic or aromatic solvent for obtaining optimum viscosity and coating thickness. FEATURES Easily applied from dilute solution Exceptional film strength Excellent lubricity Tested per ISO 10993 TYPICAL PROPERTIES These values are not intended for use in preparing specifications. Property Appearance Viscosity@ 25°C, cps Solid Content, % Specific Gravity Results Clear to Translucent Liquid 150 30 0.86 APPLICATIONS Applied PN 40097 is supplied as a one-part solution. Prior to application, the solution should be diluted to achieve the desired coating thickness in one application. The solution can be diluted by addition of dry aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones and lower alcohols. A solution containing less that 5% of the active silicone is usually desirable. A dry coating of 2 microns has been found to be suitable for lubrication. Solvent selection will determine the solutions ability to wet out the substrate to be coated. A mixture of isopropyl alcohol and Stoddard solvent is commonly used. Experimentation is recommended to determine optimum dilution. In the presence of moisture, PN 40097 hydrolyzes rapidly at room temperature after the solvent has evaporated from a thin layer to form a waxy film. The optimum cure should be based on products performance testing. A thin film cures in 24 hours at room temperature. Cure may be accelerated by mild heat, 40°C(104°F), at a relative humidity fo 50%. High humidity may extend cure time. Adhesion, lubricity and cohesive properties will continue to improve fro 7-10 days. BLENDING Applied PN 40097 can be blended with Applied MDM fluids (2-5 parts MDM fluid (1000 or 12,500 cps) to 100 parts RTV Lubricant Dispersion) that are chemically non-reactive to form an inter-penetrating network with the lubricant, which provides a softer, waxier film. Cured coatings of RTV Lubricant may be sterilized by dry heat, ethylene oxide, gamma irradiation or steam autoclave. Performance evaluations of final lubricity should be conducted on fully sterilized devices. PRECAUTIONS A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is supplied with each shipment. The dispersion contains the solvent which is a flammable liquid and a health hazard. The dispersion should not come into contact with eyes, skin, or clothing. Do not breathe the vapor. Keep away from open flame, sources of sparks, and heat. Electrically ground all vessels when transferring dispersion. The user is urged to be familiar with the properties of aliphatic solvents (VM&P Naphtha) and isopropanol. Contact with alcohol or other moisture containing solvents should be avoided. Contamination can result in an unreliable cure. Failure to achieve rapid devolatilization during cure may alter ultimate cure properties. BIOCOMPATIBILITY This material was designed to meet ISO 10993 requirements. A sample from each manufactured lot is subjected to MEM Tissue Culture testing. Additional testing is available upon request. LOT TESTING Each production lot is certified as to meet specified properties and cytotoxicity screening. Additional testing is available upon request. PACKAGING and STORAGE This product is available in 1, 5, and 55 gallon containers. The dispersion is a flammable liquid and must be stored and transported in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations. Material should be stored in original, unopened containers below 30°C to maintain product integrity. Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Suggested retest date is six months from date of shipment. Retested conforming material can be used indefinitely if properly stored in clean containers.
