Respiration: Misconceptions and Problems When asked for evidence for respiration's inputs and outputs students forgot to look for the appearance of CO2 or the disappearance of glucose or O2. Evidence comes from experimentation using the indicators given in the photosynthesis unit!!! Energy is NOT a molecule, it is NOT matter. When we use the word energy we mean either light, or the energy found in chemical bonds (and heat, which we tend to ignore). So technically you can’t say respiration is used to make energy (its used to make ATP). However, you can say Respiration is used to convert energy (from the chemical bonds in Glucose to the Chemical bonds in ATP). Similarly you can’t say photosynthesis is used to make energy (Its used to trap light energy from the sun in the chemical bonds of glucose). THE PURPOSE OF RESPIRATION IS TO MAKE ATP THE PURPOSE OF RESPIRATION IS TO MAKE ATP THE PURPOSE OF RESPIRATION IS TO MAKE ATP THE PURPOSE OF RESPIRATION IS TO MAKE ATP (The purpose of respiration is to convert the energy of chemical bonds in glucose into energy of bonds in ATP). CELLS do NOT conduct respiration to create CO2 for plants (CO2 is a gaseous waste product for cells…it just so happens that plants require it as an input)
