About the course:
Learners will explore a variety of exciting techniques: collage, use of found objects, abstract
approaches to drawing and painting, use of colour theory and mark making with acrylic and
watercolour. Wash-off technique with colored inks. Tuition is given one to one and small groups
with demonstrations throughout, accompanied by step-by-step guidelines for those who want extra
guidance.
What will I learn?
At the end of the course you should be able to • Improve confidence when working with drawing and painting techniques to create pictures.
• Develop several collages and/or painted pictures.
• Produce at least one completed watercolour or acrylic painting.
• Work safely with art equipment.
How will my work be assessed?
One to one verbal assessment, group discussion and evaluation, question and answer, written
questionnaires and presentation. Written progress and assessment on your practical project(s) will
be recorded in your individual learning plan.
What experience or qualifications do I need to start this course?
No previous knowledge or skills are necessary; this course is designed for people with an interest in
drawing and painting, but also for those who have some painting experience.
Is there anything I need to bring? Are there any other costs?
Pencil- 2B & 2H, sketchpad, putty rubber, this can cost as little as £5.00. A couple of old magazines
for collage work.
You will need to purchase a basic Watercolour or acrylic set (paint, paper and brushes) for the
course but will need to discuss this with the tutor during the first week, so please do not purchase
the watercolour set before the first session. Cost for a basic Watercolour set with paper and
brushes and inks, £25.00 approx.
Please do not purchase any items before the first session.

Yes. If you think you might need some additional support with your learning, please ask your tutor
or the Centre staff for more information about our learning support offer.
After the course…
Learners may wish to progress onto the Experimenting with Mixed Media Drawing and Painting next
term. We also offer short courses you may wish to enrol onto during this term or next term to further
develop your skills; please see our brochure or website.
What job opportunities could this lead to?
You will develop some employability skills such as applying measurements and scale, communication,
planning and meeting deadlines. This course does not lead directly into employment; you may need
further qualifications at other institutions to progress into employment.
How will I be able to give my views on the course?
