Art Fundamentals Ms. Stockwell Art Fundamentals students learn the essentials of drawing, painting and sculpture as well enjoying experiences in photography, clay and digital media. Skills taught in this class provide the background enabling students to succeed in more advanced elective art classes. Class discussions, viewing art exhibits and studying professional artists’ work are important elements in the curriculum. Goals To teach the fundamental concepts of art making. To introduce students to a variety of media and develop proficiency and confidence in working with them. To incorporate ideas learned from studying art history into the studio experience. Concepts Students learn to observe and interpret visual information by working with a variety of materials. Students learn to develop a plan and then solve problems as they occur, redesigning the plan as necessary. Skills Drawing: contour, gesture, figure, volume, perspective, shading Painting: color theory, mixing paint, value, hue, chroma and texture using Tempera, acrylic and watercolors Assessment Projects will be graded based upon individual student’s development and creative problem solving and technical skills. Participation in critiques as well discussions involving visiting artists are also important. Student’s daily work ethic and attitude in class is very important. Units Drawing with different concepts and materials, wire sculpture, design, art history overview, perspective drawing, clay sculpture, printmaking, color wheel, painting with acrylics, painting with watercolors, digital photography, and designing a site specific public art installation.
