Special Training, Facilities or Equipment: None Course Synopsis: School District # 67’s Peer Tutor Program provides students the opportunity to assist fellow students with their studies in a classroom setting. Peer Tutors work with both individual students and lead small group activities. Peer Tutors are supervised, directed and evaluated by the sponsor teacher(s). This course prepares and motivates students to provide leadership and assistance to individuals with a variety of needs. Students will develop social responsibility while acquiring skills in communication, interpersonal relations, coaching leadership and teamwork. Students will acquire a life long appreciation, value and acceptance of the dignity that should be afforded to all individuals. Peer Tutors receive either two credits for completing 60 hours or four credits for successfully completing 120 hours. Rationale: Peer Tutors help facilitate learning by supporting the delivery of classroom instruction. Peer Tutor placements are dictated by the Peer Tutors’ interest competency in the subject area as well as by the availability of placements. Peer Tutors are invaluable resources and play an integral roll in the learning process at the three high BAA Peer Tutor Program Framework schools. In this course the students will acquire background knowledge about learning and behaviour management theories appropriate to the peer tutoring setting. Peer Tutors are an invaluable resource and play an integral roll in the learning process. Expectations: Peer Tutors will Attend each class on time. Be prepared. Participate to the best of their ability. Attend all Peer Tutor Meetings and/or Seminars called during the lunch break. Work closely with the sponsor teacher to assist and support instruction. Respect all students and teachers. Keys to Success: The following are some of the key characteristics and behaviours that Peer Tutors are expected to develop and exhibit: Model appropriate and exemplary behaviours. Tutor first – peer second. Body Language is critical – Actions speak louder than words. Lots of positive verbal reinforcement. (Praise). Learn & use students’ names. Be genuine show interest. Focus on the task completion. Ignore inappropriate behaviours. Utilize the skills & experience of the sponsor teacher(s). Show enthusiasm for learning. Be fair & consistent when dealing with students. Never ridicule a student. Avoid sarcasm. Try to separate the behaviour from the person. Evaluation: Sponsor teachers will provide regular verbal feedback to the peer tutors. Each term, Peer Tutors will complete a written self-evaluation that they will share with their sponsor teacher(s), (for discussion purposes). Each term, the Sponsor teacher will complete a written evaluation of the Peer Tutor. A copy of the evaluation will be attached to the students’ report card.
