Erin Doyle (French), “Using Comic Strips to Teach French Pronunciation.” Faculty activities Indiana State University November 2004 Distinguished Alumnus During his Homecoming Weekend visit, Dr. John H. Flores, 2004 ISU Distinguished Alumnus, urged students in two Spanish 201 classes to further their language studies and spoke fondly of his days as a student in our Department. A nationally recognized school administrator, Superintendent of Schools for the City of East Chicago, and an ardent supporter of foreign language education, Dr. Flores is currently investigating scholarship funding for East Chicago students to attend ISU in Spanish and ESL/ENL teaching. The place to be Indianapolis was where it was all happening last weekend: A number of our colleagues and students attended and made presentations at IFLTA (Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Assoc.), Nov. 4-6, and INTESOL (Indiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages), Nov. 5. Presenters at IFLTA included: Prof. Lisa Calvin (Spanish), “Cultural Lessons from the Art of Carmen Lomas Garza”; Prof. Tony Macheak and LLL grad student Prof. Keri Berg has recently made 2 conference presentations: "Off the Map: Mobility and the Reading of Paris, 18301848" at City Limits? The European City 1400-1900, U. of Manitoba, Oct. 2; and “Family Values: Napoléon III, Photography and Portraits of Empire” at Nineteenth-Century French Studies, Washington U., Oct. 30. Prof. Berg has also been awarded an IT Innovations Mini-Grant for “Immigrant Voices: Integrating Literature, Language, Culture and Technology.” Prof. and Chair Ron Dunbar has been appointed chair of ISU’s search committee for an Acting Director of the Honors Program to replace Prof. Don Jennermann, who will begin his preretirement transitional leave in January. Rilke) on Tue., Nov. 9; and Nirgendwo in Afrika (“Nowhere in Africa,” Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award 2002,) on Tue., Nov. Distance conference 13 students and several LLL faculty members attended the McGraw-Hill Teleconference on Testing and Assessment in the Second Language Classroom in our Lab on Oct. 27. Thanks to Profs. Betty Phillips & Leslie Barratt and our intrepid Lab staffers for setting up this event. As everyone surely knows, ISU will observe an Official Holiday from Wed. Nov. 24-Fri. Nov. 26, inclusive. Time to write those papers, make the exam-study outlines, and try to have a little bite to eat – on Thurs., perhaps? According to various sources, Thanksgiving (Day) in the US is our version of the “harvest festivals” that are known all over the world. After various tweaks over the centuries, Pres. FDR set the day to the current “fourth Thurs. in Nov.” in 1939. Watch for further developments. Meanwhile, everybody have a great break. When we get back on Mon. the 29th, it will be week #15 of 16 (classes)!
