Writing Workshop ~ Lab Reports and
Science Books
Multiple Trials and Detailed Records Matter: In this session, writers will learn to
record as much as they can to capture everything they remember from the
experiment.
Interpreting Scientific Results and Developing Conclusions: In this session, writers
will hold a “symposium” to have scientific discussions about their latest study. I will
explain to the class that when writing a conclusion page, it is important to ask”why?”
and to speculate about answers. I will tell students that scientists often consult
outside resources – other scientists’ experiments, other articles and resources to help
them interpret their own results and write conclusions.
Authors Share Scientific Ideas/Conclusions: In this session, I will teach students
that scientists spend a lot of time writing about their conclusions. They push
themselves to ask Why? And then offer the best explanation they can based on their
results. In this way, their conclusions often lead to more investigations and research.
Ways to help at home!
*Log on to pearsonsuccessnet.com to check out
the practice test assigned. username: first
initial, last name cv (dcherrycv)
password: first initial, student number

*Find books or information on force, motion,
friction…information that will help us study and
understand our ramps and lab experiments
*Complete the reading stems and graphic
organizer at home.
Using Revision Materials and Writing: In this session, the focus will be the quantity of writing children produce. In this lesson, students will be provided
with an opportunity to talk out their ideas with someone. Writers need practice, talking and growing ideas together.
Scientists Learn From Other Sources as Well as from Experiments: In this session, I will teach students that when scientists want to improve their
writing, they learn more about what they are investigating. That is, scientists improve their writing by learning more science and then revise their writing
based on what they learned.
Math
Adding on a Hundreds Chart: Children will use a hundreds chart to add 2-two digit numbers. Essential Understanding: Patterns on a hundreds chart can
be used to add numbers and to develop mental math strategies and number sense.
Adding Multiples of 10: Children will add using multiples of 10. Essential Understanding: Adding groups of tens is similar to adding numbers less than 10.
Problem Solving: Look for a Pattern: Children will use number patterns to solve problems. Essential Understanding: Some problems can be solved by
identifying elements that repeat in a predictable way.
Topic 6: Re-teaching: Mentally add multiples of 10 to a two-digit number. Add a two-digit number to a two-digit number using mental math. Use a
hundreds chart to add 2-digit numbers. Add multiples of 10. Use number pattern to solve problems. Purpose: Provide children with more examples and
practice for each lesson in the topic.
Reading Workshop ~
Internal Thoughts Help Us Learn About the Characters: Readers learn about the character by paying attention to the internal thoughts and author
narration.
Reading Stem: The character ____ thought/said “ “. This makes me think ___________.
Readers Notice When Our Characters Act Out of Character: In this lesson, readers will identify moments when our characters are “out of character”
Reading Stem: At first I thought _ (character) ____ was __(trait)___. But then, he or she _____________. This makes me think ____________.
Readers track their characters feelings: identify their characters feelings in the beginning, middle and end of the story
