Project Challenge:
You are a travel agent that promotes travel to locations of natural
geologic disasters – earthquakes and volcanoes. Your job is to
create a PhotoStory that will EDUCATE and ENCOURAGE people to
visit these locations.
Task One: Prior Knowledge
Brainstorm everything you know that is related to earthquakes and
volcanoes. If possible, try to define any vocabulary words. If you are unable
to define all vocabulary words, it is ok! This now becomes a QUESTION for
the next part…!
Stuff I already know…
Task Two: Questioning
Think about what you already know from task one and the vocabulary or
the questions that came about from that task. List as many questions as
you can to help accomplish your challenge. Remember, don’t just think
about what and where questions…dig deeper into the question and think
about the why and how questions.
Write everything that comes to your mind. You will not be answering the
questions in this task. This will be a future task…

Task Three: Research
Use your questions from the previous task to research your challenge. List
new vocabulary (answers to “what” questions) and new concept knowledge
(answers to “why” and “how” questions) in the appropriate sections. This
research should include:

o Rating volcanoes
o Locations of high volcanic activity
 Why volcanoes are located here
 Why volcanoes erupt
o Volcano prediction – methods, warning signs, challenges, etc.

o Famous volcanoes and volcanic eruptions
 Earthquake research
o “Parts” of an earthquake (ex: epicenter)
o Info about types of seismic waves, how they travel
o Rating of earthquakes
o Locations of high earthquake activity
 Why earthquakes are located here
 What causes an earthquake to happen
o Earthquake prediction – methods, warning signs, challenges, etc.
o Earthquake dangers
o How to prepare for an earthquake (individually at home and as a
city or location that gets a lot of quakes)
o Famous earthquakes in history
Your new knowledge should help to develop new questions as you research.
Write these questions in the space provided so that you don’t forget them.
This also shows active research skills, or that you are thinking about your
research and what it means – not just copying and pasting.
There is also space to draw and label sketches related to earthquakes and
volcanoes.
Lastly, keep a list of all resources used. Although it doesn’t have to be in
the proper bibliography format, it may come in handy if you need to
reference it again later.

Task Four: Create a PhotoStory Script
Use your research to develop a script that will EDUCATE and ENCOURAGE
people to visit locations of natural geologic disasters – earthquakes and
volcanoes. Because you the expert, it is important that you include all
important concepts related to your challenge topic(s). In your PhotoStory,
you must have the following:
1. The “basics” about earthquakes and volcanoes - an explanation of new
vocabulary terms and related concepts, including the following topics with
10-15 pictures (for each volcano & quake) related to the concepts:



o Types of volcanoes
o Formation of volcanoes

Task Five: Create the PhotoStory
Now, use your script to create the PhotoStory! Remember to read your
script loud and clear, just as if you were presenting to an audience. Your
words should go along with the variety of pictures that help explain the
concepts. The PhotoStory should be about 5 minutes in length.
Project Research/Preparation
1. Complete your research and write your script.
2. Locate pictures that relate to script information. Save these pics to a folder on your “H” drive.
Import and Arrange Your Pictures
1. Select “Begin a new story” and click on
the Next Button.
2. Click on the Import Pictures Button
3. Direct computer to the project folder
that contains the pictures to be used in
the presentation. Select the photo or
photos (hold down control key to select
more than one photo). Click on OK.
4. Arrange order of photos – to move
photos, click and drag forward or
backward.
5. Edit your pictures – click on photo and click on the Edit Button – editing options include:







adjust color levels
correct red eye
adjust contrast
rotate the picture clockwise or counterclockwise
manually crop the picture
remove black borders and automatically crop the pictures
add effects that change the appearance of the picture
6. Click on the Save Project Button, direct to the project folder, change the file name, and click on the Save
Button.
7. Repeat for other photos and save project.
8. Click on the Next Button.
Add a Title to Your Pictures
1. Click on slide that you want to add text
to.
2. Type in text in scroll bar area.
3. Adjust font (font type, style, size,
effects, and color)
4. Select horizontal location of text (left,
center, right)
5. Select vertical location of text (top,
center, bottom)
6. Repeat for other slides.
7. Save project.
8. Click on the Next Button.
Narrate Your Pictures and Customize Motion
1. Select the picture that you want to
narrate.
2. Once you have a microphone connected
to your computer, click on the red
Record Button – speak clearly and don’t
rush through the material.
3. Click on the Preview Button to
playback your narration.
4. Click on the Save Project Button if
recording is successful or click on the
Delete Narration Button and repeat
recording if needed.
5. Repeat for other slides.
6. Click on the First Slide.
Narrate Your Pictures and Customize Motion (continued)
7. Click on the Customize Motion
Button – to customize motion and set
transitions.
8. Select “Specify start and end position
of motion” -- a rectangle with handles
appears on the picture in the Start
position and End position boxes.
9. In the Start position box, resize the
rectangle and then move the whole
rectangle to the area of the picture that
you want to receive focus when the
picture first appears in your story.
10. In the End position box, resize the
rectangle, and then move the rectangle
to the area of the picture that you want
to receive focus at the end of the
video for that picture.
11. Click on Preview Button to check motion.
12. Click on the Go To Next Picture Button and repeat steps to adjust motion.
13. Whenever prompted to save project, click on Yes
14. Go back to first picture.
15. Click on the Transition Tab.
16. Select transition.
17. Select timing – either leave set to automatic or enter desired time.
18. Click on the Go To Next Picture Button and repeat steps to select transition.
19. Whenever prompted to save project, click on Yes.
20. Click on the Save Button.
21. Click on the Close Button.
22. Click on the Next Button.
**REQUIRED** Save Your Story to Play in Windows Media Player
1. In the Activities Section, select “Save your story for
playback on your computer.”
2. Click on the Browse Button.
3. Direct the computer to your project folder.
4. Change the file name.
5. Click on the Save Button.
6. Click on the Next Button – this step is important
since this builds the document that will play in
Windows Media Player.
7. Select View Your Story or click on the Exit Button.
