Individual Tutoring Plan (ITP)
Pupil Information: ……………..
School: Thaxted Primary
Year Group: 6
KS1 Maths Level: 2A Current Level Maths: 3B Target Level: 4A
Tutoring Information:
Name of tutor: Miss Wiseman
Location of tutoring: Thaxted Primary School
Time of Tutoring: 8.15-8.45 on Tuesdays & 3.15-4.15 on various days to be confirmed.
Start date: Tuesday 14th October 2008
Number of sessions: 10 (plus liaison meetings)
The following targets have been set and agreed by the class teacher/tutor/pupil and parent/guardian:
Target
To develop efficient and
accurate mental methods in all
4 operations.
To develop efficient and
accurate written methods in all
4 operations.
To be able to confidently
extract operation and
calculation from word/real life 2
step problems.
To be able to chose the most
appropriate method for
calculating; mental, written,
calculator.
Planned Support
Evaluation/Assessment
Model ‘mental jottings’. Practise reducing steps in mental methods such as
partitioning for add, counting on for sub, partitioning/doubling for multiply
and use of multiplication for dividing. Practise mental calculations with by
gradually limiting jottings from number lines/partitions to just totals ‘on the
way’ to final answers. Number Shark games for quick mental maths.
Choose, with child, one effective way for solving trickier calculations on
paper – practise and use amongst other maths. Look at real life word
problems to solve with written methods. Talk through each step of
calculations – Why did you… ? What is the value of…? What if..? ‘Can you
spot the mistake?’ tasks. Model checking calculations efficiently.
Look at various word problems and language used. What sort of language
is used for each operation? Look at problems with redundant information
and practise drawing out necessary information so they really ‘unpick’
problem. Model my thoughts as solving a problem to show need for
approximation and checking to make sure ‘sensible’ answer. Talk through
each step of solving problem as above.
Look at missing number calculations and use of inverses – use idea of
‘simple’ numbers to understand rules of computation and use of inverses
e.g. 10 + ? = 12 ~ 12 – 10 = ? and apply to trickier calculations with a
calculator.
Timed questions using each method. Which was most effective and why?
Can she use efficient and quick mental jottings to
solve level 4 problems?
Evidence in tuition sessions, class mental maths and
weekly mental maths tests.
Can she teach someone her method? Parents!
Evidence of checked calculations in class work and
assessments.
Is she able to talk through a problem?
Evidences from class assessments and confidence to
solve problems in sessions.
Improved scores in assessments in class. Greater
confidence to ‘have a go’ with method. Can use a
calculator to solve inverse problems. Uses written
methods only where appropriate.
We have discussed this Individual Tutoring Plan and agree to the targets set.
