Biographical Sketch
My educational background consists of a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Science from Saint
Anselm College with a concentration in Forensics as well as completion of the Direct
Entry Masters nursing program from Salem State College. Upon completion of my
education in New England I moved to Nashville, TN to take a job as a Staff Nurse in the
Trauma Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. I was an active member of
numerous hospital committees, which included a university wide workplace safety and
violence group, and worked closely with the VUMC pharmacy to improve a drug card
system that ensured safe care delivery by nurses on the trauma unit. I currently reside in
Detroit, MI and attend Wayne State University’s Nurse Anesthesia program.
Position Statement
As we approach the forefront of change to the educational commitment required to become a
nurse anesthetist, I feel that student involvement is of the utmost importance at this time because
we are the future of the CRNA profession. As a student nurse anesthetist, I am dedicated to
promoting the importance of the profession and the rigorous education needed to give it the
esteemed reputation it has earned over the years. The opportunity to become the student
representative for the AANA Education Committee would be a privilege, as representing
students on a national level has been a personal goal since the start of my nursing career.
Students remain valuable prospective members of this well-respected profession making
education within the profession of paramount importance. It is for this reason that I am seeking
your nomination for the position of student representative to the AANA Education Committee.
The importance of protecting our position in the healthcare community is becoming a rising
focus among anesthesia providers. Ensuring our futures as CRNA’s requires a myriad of
responsibilities. One approach for safeguarding our future is by refining the educational process
for CRNA’s. The leading example is the current movement towards the doctorate of nurse
anesthesia practice (DNAP). Another important approach to solidify our continued presence is
to adjust educational standards to be commensurate with the changing landscape of medicine,
nursing, and anesthesiology. We as nurse anesthetist and student nurse anesthetist do this
through our interface with our accrediting body, the Council on Accreditation (COA). The
Education Committee is notably connected with both of these very important matters.
As your student representative I would be honored to serve as your voice regarding both
educational topics and current issues affecting our profession. My vigilance and communication
skills leave me well suited to advocate for students by voicing all questions and concerns to the
Education Committee and the AANA. I appreciate your consideration in voting for me as your
student representative. I look forward to serving you in the 2012-2013 academic year. I also
wish each of you continued success on this challenging, but thoroughly rewarding endeavor. See
you on the other side of the profession… CRNA!
