William D. Smith
President
William Smith is President and Senior Consultant of GCI Consultants, LLC. With over 40 years
of experience, Mr. Smith provides clients with an extensive history of construction expertise and
industry leadership, along with a practical knowledge of construction procedures and practices.
Prior to joining GCI, Mr. Smith was president and general manager of a large specialty
construction firm in south Florida. He has been providing consulting services for decades and
has an extensive history of forensic building investigation. He is recognized as a leading expert
in the field of windows, doors, glass, and exterior wall systems including all aspects of
weatherproofing and water intrusion.
Mr. Smith has designed a variety of glazing applications for new construction projects including
windows and glazed curtain walls, as well as specialty glazing system for exhibits and blast
resistance and hurricane resistant protection.
Mr. Smith is a Florida certified building contractor. He serves as a director of the Southeast
Glass Association and is a member of ASTM International, the Window and Door Manufacturers
Association, the Construction Specifications Institute, and other construction industry
associations. He previously served as director of the Associated General Contractors of
America, including serving as a Director of the National Associate Members Council, and he
was a founder of the Glazier’s Apprenticeship Program,
Mr. Smith has been a speaker at meetings of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the
Building Officials and Code Administrators International, ASTM International, the American
Architectural Manufacturers Association, and the Insurance Institute for Property Loss
Reduction.
Mr. Smith has testified as an expert witness in many legal proceedings and has published a
number of papers on water infiltration, quality control construction methods, and testing
procedures.
