Protecting Moonee Valley’s heritage for future generations

The City of Moonee Valley has a rich history and is home to a large number of historical buildings and culturally significant sites.

Council has recently completed the draft Moonee Valley Thematic Places Heritage Study

(2013). The study provides an assessment of several potentially significant heritage places that are not currently protected under the Heritage Overlay.

Mayor of Moonee Valley, Cr Narelle Sharpe, said Council has an important role to play in identifying and protecting Moonee Valley’s heritage.

“The draft study has identified 14 individual places and seven residential precincts as potentially being of local heritage significance and worthy of inclusion in a Heritage Overlay.”

“The identified places and precincts represent two significant periods in Moonee Valley’s history.”

“The first is ‘ Connecting Victorians ’ by transport and communications with a focus on the ‘Gold

Fields Routes’, and the second is ‘ Shaping the Suburbs ’ with a focus on Post World War Two development and our public housing e states.”

“The draft study aims to recognise and protect those historical places that have helped shape

Moonee Valley into what we see today.”

Portfolio holder for Land Use and Planning, Cr Paul Giuliano said Council wants to hear from members of the community to get their thoughts on the places we have recommended for protection.

“We also want to hear from those who may have grown up or spent time in some of the buildings and places included in the study.”

“Visit mvcc.vic.gov.au/heritage to find out how to submit your feedback by Friday, 29

November.”

At the conclusion of the consultation, the feedback will be reviewed and recommendations will be put forward to Council as to whether these places and precincts should be investigated for inclusion in a Heritage Overlay.

Council has also commenced work on a Heritage Gap Study, which will identify places and buildings that best represent the themes of the Moonee Valley Thematic Environmental

History .

This project will include analysis of previous Council heritage studies, state wide heritage reviews, historical documents and maps, as well as consultation with historical societies, residents and community groups.

Once completed, the Heritage Gap Study will provide a prioritised work program to guide future heritage studies undertaken by Council.
