Character Analysis Mini Project
Directions: The first genre piece you created was a news article. Now, you will have the option of creating a second genre piece that looks at a specific character of To Kill A
Mockingbird. You have the option to create a blog, a POV piece, or an obituary. The requirements for each one is below.
Character Analysis (Choose One of the following)
Option One: A point of view piece
Directions: Choose a character (other than the narrator/ main character) and pretend you are part of the story as that character. Rewrite a scene from that
character’s perspective. Then write a paragraph explaining how this perspective alters the particular scene. 800 words.
Example: Rewrite the Tim Johnson shooting from Atticus’ POV or the trial from Mayella Ewell’s POV
Option Two: Character Blog
Directions: Create a blog from the perspective of one of your characters. Can be on paper or can be digital. Some suggestions are www.wordpress.com or
www.blogger.com. You need at least four blog entries. The blog entries should answer the following questions,
a. a quote/greeting,
b. a paragraph about me,
c.
a blog that argues why I am an important character in the novel and a list of interests/favorites.
d. Use relevant details from the novel to develop your profile. How does the character interact with other characters, advance the plot, or develop the
theme of the novel
e. Use two quotes or details from the book

Option Three: Obituary
Directions: Create an obituary for a character in To Kill A Mockingbird. The obituary should answer the following questions,
a. a paragraph about the person,
b. a paragraph that argues why they were an important person to the story and in Maycomb
c.
Use relevant details from the novel to develop your obituary . How does the character interact with other characters, advance the plot, or develop the
theme of the novel
d. Use two quotes or details from the book
e. Funeral time
f.
800 words

Characterization Examples
Chapter 19 (Part Two) (POV Piece)
The room was stifling, and not just because of the
record breaking temperatures and lack of ventilation. The men of
the jury felt trapped in a room where a tense excitement reigned
and each was afraid to speak his mind about the events of the
past few hours. Jonathan Cunningham sat silent; waiting for
someone else to take the lead on the discussion and afraid of the
once impossible thoughts swarming in his brain.
How could his opinion be so changed in just a few
hours? Jonathan recalled this morning. He remembered putting
on his best clothes, despite being patched and greying. He had
been angry that this young black had raped one of his own – a
white woman. Jonathan had felt excited for this trial. He wanted
Robinson to feel 100,000 volts pulsing through his body as he
fried in the electric chair. That would put these blacks in their
place. In that moment, there had been no doubt about what
would happen in the jury room.
However, as the day waned on and that damned Atticus
Finch began his speaking, the world became confused………
