GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 9 September 2015 GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL A dynamic rural School empowering students with skills to be future focussed culturally aware and creative thinkers. We build SKILLS for SUCCESS! Dear Parents/Caregivers Two weeks until the holidays; where has the term gone? We have certainly been hit by this flu virus that has been going around and would like to thank all you parents and caregivers for keeping your children at home when they are unwell. I think our average attendance in the senior room over the last two weeks has been 10 but the junior room has recovered and is now back up to its full complement of students. A few days a couple of weeks ago there were only 6 in attendance in the junior room. Let’s hope we’re over the worst of it. CULTURAL FESTIVAL The highlight of last week was our trip to the Cultural Festival at Horncastle Arena. We especially enjoyed the bright and upbeat performance by Aranui School with their Samoan cultural display. The Irish Dance School was also amazing with a very polished and dazzling performance. We hope that those who came and helped with transport and supervision enjoyed the event as much as we did. We think our juniors were great sitting for all that time and becoming involved with hand clapping and foot stamping when appropriate with the performances. Thanks also to Murray and Colin who waited patiently for us to return back to school. PRINCIPALS AWARD Congratulations to Savannah and Adele who received last week’s Principal’s awards. Adele received hers for self-managing her work schedule and quality of her schoolwork and Savannah got hers for her great maths work. Great skills for life, well done to both of you! ASSEMBLY There is a full assembly this week on Friday at 2.30pm in Room 2. The last and final assembly for the term will be held on 25th September. The end of term celebration is going to be a disco at the Greta Tavern for the children that Friday night. More details to come in the next newsletter. Celebrating birthdays between now and our next newsletter we have Ashlee. We hope that you have an amazing day. SCHOOL PHOTOS School photos have been scheduled for 28th October which we are very happy about as the children will definitely be looking much healthier then. PARENT EVENING This is a short reminder about your evening with Tim Heidmann. Our parent evening is to be held on Tuesday 22nd September beginning at 6.00pm. Tim Heidmann who is one of our ‘Resource Teachers for Learning and Behaviour’ (RTLB) will speak on ‘The Ten Most Common Mistakes We Make in Parenting.’ Tim says it’s a lot of fun. He is passionate about what he does in the RTLB service and well-grounded in behavioural analysis and modification. The format of the evening will be similar to that of our last parent evening. Children will be fed and entertained in Room 4 while parents meet with Tim. After Tim’s discussion the board will present the new vision and strategic goals based on their consultation with the community. DAFFODIL DAY Thank you for your generosity and support for Daffodil Day last week; we raised $65.00 which is great especially as we had quite a few absentees. What a great deal of fun and some very focussed learning was had by those who were at school. We had to test our rockets to see what modifications were needed to make our rockets fly better. We were very scientific recording the amount of fuel to air and the time of the flight. We decided that climbing a tree was not the best way to see whose rocket flew the highest!
