GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 12 August 2015 GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL A dynamic rural School empowering students with skills to be future focussed culturally aware and creative thinkers. We build SKILLS for SUCCESS! Dear Parents/Caregivers WELCOME We would like to welcome Rowan Anderson who began school last week; he has transitioned to school very smoothly. I believe we may have missed welcoming Lucas Henderson, Zoe Api and Aadyn Howie this past term also. It is great to have our new students and we wish them well in their schooling with us. We have a very active junior room which now has 16 students in it with one more to come this year. Our school roll currently stands at 33 students. 7 A-SIDE TOURNAMENT The culmination of our sports training sessions with Waikari was the 7 Aside tournament which was held in Amuri yesterday. To have our students participate in their own age groups with the Waikari School children was another opportunity to learn the skills of getting on together, playing together and learning to cooperate as team mates. I believe that our Year 4/5 teams won all their 6 games, two netball, two football and two touch. The Year 5/6 and 7/8 teams also had some success and were elated when they won a game. What great social learning opportunities these are. We are grateful to Amuri School for organising and hosting this event. PRINCIPALS AWARD Congratulations to Flynn Sowden and Horton McKay who received last week’s principal’s awards. Flynn received his for great focus in his work and Horton for making Waikari Students’ feel welcome by playing with them when they came to visit. These are both great skills for successful living boys, well done! CPIT VISIT Our Year 7/8 students had a great day at Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of Technology last Tuesday. They had a session on the performing arts and in the afternoon did radio advertising session as well. This is part of our careers programme and it’s great to be able to interact with other students from other schools in their own age group. We had to admit that we could have done these activities in our own schools but having the opportunity to perform and associate with others is very important in our small school situation. FIELDS OF REMEMBRANCE Ten of our senior students also attended the Fields of Remembrance memorial service in which they placed the crosses that represented our fallen soldiers from the Scargill/ Greta Valley area. We were proud of the respect they portrayed in the service. CLASSROOM SCHEDULE Next week Jo will be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in the senior room. I will teach on Wednesday and Sandra will teach again on Friday as Jo and I are at a course in Christchurch. SHOES IN CLASS Having changed the main foyer flooring surface in between Rooms 1 and 2 we find it necessary to have the students take their shoes, boots or sneakers off outside before coming indoors . The mess that is created with mud, leaves etc. in the foyer creates a formidable clean up at the end of the day for the cleaner. This creates a couple of issues for children and staff the first one for the juniors is that they need to know how to put their shoes on and tie them up which is quite a significant stage for some of them. For some it will mean spending some time teaching them to tie up their shoelaces and we ask that you spend some time teaching them at home how to do this. The next issue is that even though the classroom floors are carpeted they still aren’t the warmest surfaces for walking around on. Perhaps you may consider either sending along some thick warm socks or slippers for them to wear in the classroom.
