FIRST AID INFORMATION EVENING
28TH February 2012
Patients Comments:The recent First Aid evening at the Ridgeway surgery, led by Karen and John, was clear and informative.
The paramedics showed us the revised methods of chest compressions and ‘rescue breaths’. Although I
have been to several demonstrations of these methods many years ago, the latest advice is simplified
and practical - easy to remember. We were shown how to use the methods effectively and told how and
why these emergency actions are so important for saving life. It was amazing to see that the latest
defibrillators are almost automatic and can be used by anyone, so we were given confidence to use one,
if needed. The First Aid evening also covered the important points about helping someone with shock,
burns, choking, poisoning, bleeding or a breakage, and also what to have in a first aid kit.
Importantly, the organisation for the evening was very effective. The emailed communication was good
(including a timely reminder) and the ‘staff’ were welcoming. There was no waste of time and the
technology worked! It is excellent that a GP surgery is offering this sort of education session.
Best wishes,
Keith Wischhusen
I've "done" first aid courses since I was in the GLB wihen I was 13 (60 years ago!) when I had to know
exactly how to place the pin in a sling and how to carry a patient down a mountainside after I had put the
broken leg in splints using umpteen triangular bandages (though where I was supposed to find them I
never did find out!). The courses have improved over the years and keeping the patient alive became
more important than my knowledge of the first aid book.
This couse on Tuesday evening proved to be one of the best. My last course was quite a number of
years ago and I had lost confidence that I would be able to offer sufficient help should it be needed. Now
though, thanks to those two on Tuesday (sorry I've already forgotten their names), I won't just be a
bystander, and I shall try to persuade my Bowls club to hold a similar session.
Thank you for finding me a place at the last minute.

1st Aid Evening
I found the presentation clear and straight forward. If there had been more space/fewer people
then an opportunity to practise some of the skills being demonstrated would have been
'confidence building' but all in all, a very useful session.
Thank you,
Beryl Otvos
Many thanks for organising this event. I found it very interesting and fruitful. As I had attended several
first aid courses many years ago, it was good to refresh my memory as I had forgotten the resuscitation
techniques. In addition, I had never seen a defibrillator before, so that was an added bonus. The leaflets
given at the end were also very useful to keep handy. Considering the timescale we had, the course was
very well delivered and covered the essential for everyday life.
Once again thank you for providing it.
Kind Regards

A very interesting evening with lots of useful information and helpful techniques put across in an informal and yet
educational way. The demonstrations of CPR and use of the Recovery Position were especially helpful. Although I
have attended First Aid courses in the past the evening talk by the London Ambulance Service provided very
valuable revision as well as introducing new life saving treatments such as the use of the defibrillator. All the
essential topics were covered in the time available and the OHP slides were concise and relevant.
It would be a good idea to run a similar course annually as a refresher.
Kind regards
Martin Legg
