5th Week Of September 8, 2015 My STAR for the week: My WISH for the future: Notes to the Teacher: Name:_____________________________________________ Parent Signature:____________________________________ 5th Buzz Aldrin Elementary School Schaumburg, IL September 11, 2015 Reading: We finished reading Davey Crocket in our Treasures book. WE are working on Plot Diagram and how the events fit with the characters feelings and actions. We have weekly guided reading work. We are working on reader’s response on a character they are reading about. The Heads Together activity is based on a reading in the Faces magazine. The purpose of this activity is to work on questions to prepare for a group discussion then get together in their reading group and share what they learned. The students will fill out a worksheet to explain their thinking. Teachers will check in with student groups throughout the week. At home, ask your students questions about the plot diagram based on a fiction story. Enjoy a good book-read daily at least 20 minutes. Writing: In writing this week, students continue to work on some introduction activities to school. We worked on Heads Together activity with the writing ACE strategy. Students also worked on forming complete sentences. Students were introduced to their writing journals and put a tab on resources which will help them in daily writing. The writing process and the traits were introduced as well. Science: Kuczynski: We read and discussed how to classify organisms and why we classify. We learned that living things are different but share similar structures. We learned that there are six kingdoms and within each kingdom the groups get a classification system. We also studied that plants have qualities and are put into four common plant phyla. We learned the differences between plants, animals, and other organisms. Leja: We began our New Frontier video and lesson this week. We have learned strategies for reducing our carbon footprint. We also have started looking at ways to save money at home by using less energy or more energy efficient items and brands. Levin: This week we completed our layers of water experiment and saw how the amount of salinity in water affects where it lays in comparison to water with no salinity. We then began to focus on the different properties of our oceans, as well as the different types of freshwater found throughout our world. Pike: Physical Science – Properties of Matter We found the connections between volume, density, and buoyancy. Ask about the two labs we completed. Quiz us on chapter 11 vocabulary. We are experts. We will be writing next week about our discoveries. Social Studies: The students worked on the key elements of a world map and key geographic terms. The students used page 1 in their interactive notebooks. Students read pages 3-5 in their text books. Some classes began the Geography Challenge. 5th Math: This week in math the students covered lessons 6,7,8,9 in their chapter one notebooks. They worked on place-value positions and reading and writing whole numbers through hundred million. The students were also engaged in working with exponents and multiplying mentally by multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000. Advanced Math: We estimated decimal sums and differences this week. We also solved problems and compared our answers to our estimates. We found patterns when working with decimals. Money is the best example of how important a decimal point can be. Would you rather have $0.06 or $600.00? We will review chapter 5.3 on Monday and test on Tuesday. Announcements: September 16- ½ day dismissal 11:40 School pictures are September 21.
