yourself with the 5th grade standards,
what your student will be learning this
year, and what the 5th grade expectations
are from Miss Young and Mrs. Branch.

http://www.mpsaz.org/
Our standards are based on the Arizona College and career ready standards. The
expectations we are placing students is much more intensive than in past years, but
students are walked through the rigor at a pace that is manageable and attainable for
them.

• Interactive Notebooks
• Data Notebooks
Math
• The goal in 5th grade math is to develop the concepts and understanding of
mathematics and to recognize the connections between math and everyday
life.

English Language Arts
ELA covers reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with a heavy focus on
nonfiction reading. Students should be able to read fluently, at a good pace, and
accurately. Students are tested once a quarter to check their progress as they
move through the grade level.

• Speaking and listening
• vocabulary
Science
• The goal of science in 5th grade is to have students form ideas and explore the
world around them in a scientific way. Students are guided in the process of
scientific inquiry through purposeful observations, investigations and demonstrating
understanding through a variety of experiences (science kits and field trips).
• Time in science is limited
• Inquiry process- plan, conduct, and investigate
• Life-the body
• Physical-force, gravity, and matter
• Earth and space- moon phases, motion of objects in the sky, plants and their charcteristics
Social Studies
5th graders focus on American history. We will be starting with the Native Americans and
move to the colonies, the revolution, slavery, and expansion across the nation, moving
through the civil war. We do quite a few projects and activities to get a feel for the time
period and the events we are learning about.
The social studies expectation is that students keep their social studies work in their ELA
notebooks, as we combine the two subjects so closely.
Students will not have any homework in this subject, but they will be taking two tests a unit
