Which is why in advance of Memorial Day and the kickoff of the summer travel season, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) is reminding motorists to “Be Tire Smart.” Under inflated tires waste gas, wears tires out quicker, and puts drivers at risk. In addition, following a long winter in many parts of the country, the snow has given way to an epidemic of potholes, causing havoc to many vehicles, so properly maintaining and checking your tires is more important than ever. Properly inflated tires can help save lives and money at the pump. Travel can be expensive, but simple tire maintenance saves money. Drivers can save 11 cents per gallon at the pump and help their tires last longer with simple monthly maintenance. A tire expert/RMA spokesperson is available for on-camera interviews to discuss the importance of properly inflated tires and demonstrate: How to check tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge Where to find the correct inflation pressure on your vehicle (hint—it’s not on the tire) Importance of checking tires when they are cold or haven’t been driven on for at least three hours Penny Test to check tire tread depth Inspect tread for damage – punctures, cuts, bulges In preparation for Memorial Day and summer travel, as well as the 13th annual National Tire Safety Week (June 1-7), RMA urges drivers to Be Tire Smart and take advantage of the easy money-saving solution that only takes a few minutes. According to an RMA survey of drivers across the country, only 15% of Americans properly check their tire pressure – leaving the majority with inflating gas bills and increasing their risk for accidents. Recent survey data also revealed that motorists need a refresher course when it comes to proper tire care: • Only 9% of vehicles had at least four properly inflated tires • 69% of vehicles had at least one under inflated tire • 18% of vehicles had at least one tire under inflated by at least 8 pounds per square inch (psi) .
