Exhibition Dates: Thursday 26 November 2014 – Monday 19 January 2015. Thematic Statement: Everyone generally prefers to know where he or she is in a physical sense. To be familiar with the surrounds and have an intrinsic understanding of our position – geographically speaking is a basic human need. And the absence of this sensation, to feel lost, is possibly one of the most disconcerting feelings we can experience. We draw comfort in a physical sense of place - particularly when we lack direction either psychologically or emotionally and whenever our consciousness is void of this “sense of location”, we invest a considerable effort both physically and mentally to pinpoint our location again – to link ourselves to the landmarks and the physicality of place. UNEARTHING AUSTRALIA'S NATURAL COLOURS L A T I T U D E Is it this sensation of feeling lost that has driven mankind to define the physical space so precisely and to ensure that, no matter what, we can pinpoint our location within in a few centimetres? And with this capacity comes comfort, security and control – a sense of knowing. Since time began, humans have endeavoured to harness this sensation through the art of mapping and surveying, documenting place in its most physical ways, gauging its contours and measuring its landmarks. We document the landscape in a consistent and scientific way with rock and cave paintings dating back thousands of years demonstrating our desire to document mountains, rivers and valleys – ensuring we and the places we desire can always be found. In the present day the science of mapping is extremely complex and we have a sophisticated capacity to pinpoint locations and interpret the landscape from above as well as below the surface of the ground. Our location according to a standardised, professionally produced document is irrefutable and modern GPS and mapping tools provide us with a precise location and providing us with a set of rules or directions when we choose to change our position and repeat our journeys. Both beautiful and precise, modern map-making provides a bridge for our intellect and our physical presence to merge, to understand and interpret movement and position and with this comes a sense of comfort, control and security. Thematic Definitions: Mapping – and operation that associates each element of a given set (domain) with one or more elements of a second set (the range). Topography – the arrangement of natural and artificial physical features of an area. Surveying – The measurement of dimensional relationships, as of horizontal distances, elevations, directions and angles, on the Earth’s surface especially for use in locating property boundaries and construction layout. Submissions: Artists are invited to submit artworks based on the theme of mapping, topography and surveying. Utilising the thematic statement above, artists are encouraged to create new works which are influenced by the physical nature of maps and topography or to delve into the psychological sense of physical location and how this impacts on our state of mind and our behaviour. 2| L A T I T U D E The artwork can be in any medium and may be 2D or 3D.
