HTA Survey Reminder: As you are no doubt aware a request went out last week asking that all PI's complete an online questionnaire concerning the Human Tissue Act, the completion date should have read by 30th September 2011 (see the attached memo, all relevant attachments are included). Remember also that if you do not have human tissues stored in your freezers (the online survey has to be completed in either case) also the disclaimer proforma to that effect needs to be completed and returned to Barbara Coles <colesb2@Cardiff.ac.uk>.

To complete the survey please read the attached information and follow the link, if you need any further assistance please contact Dr Clive Gregory (gregoryc1@cardiff.ac.uk, ext 87221)

The e-mail sent read as follows:

As you may be aware, the Heath Park campus receives a full research licence from the Human

Tissue Authority and your School is one that carries out licensable activities under the Human

Tissue Act 2004.

In order to ensure all users of human tissue have been captured, the Licence Holder and

Designated Individual (DI), Professor Jon Bisson, have decided that it is essential for all Principal

Investigators in School's holding human tissue to complete the Human Tissue Act Survey 2011.

For those who do not use human tissue, the survey will be very short and your response is essential to obtain a complete picture of tissue holdings. For those who do hold tissue the survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete (see memo below).

Surveys in subsequent years will revert back to just those who hold tissue.

The survey will be open until the 30 October 2011 and can be found at the following location: https://www.surveys.cardiff.ac.uk/hta2011medic

Availability of Teaching Space in the Cochrane Building: We have been advised that the

Cochrane building will not be available for use until the second half of November. If you have teaching booked in the Cochrane building before then you need to make alternative arrangements.

Gareth Pugh in the school of medicine will be able to tell you the exact date that the Cochrane building teaching space will be available as soon as this information is available.

Venus Transit Expedition - Huw James, Science Junkie In 2012, one of the rarest natural scientific events takes place in the form of a Transit of Venus across the face of our Sun. The Venus Transit

Expedition is an 8 week Ed-venture to the West Pacific rim in April 2012, looking to inspire the next generation of scientists and explorers in a science expedition in the public eye. The group aims to carry out the expedition, view and record the Venus Transit and filter content back to class rooms, living rooms and many more venues across Britain. The Venus Transit Expedition Project is designed to bring back the days of scientific endeavou r. It’s looking to emulate Captain Cook’s maiden voyage, for the Royal Society, to witness and record the path of Venus across the Sun which happens twice every hundred and twenty years or so. Huw James will lead a team across the planet to witness and record this phenomenal event that is now literally, a once in a life time experience and is sharing it with the world. In this talk he’ll look at the trials and tribulations of those that went before him and the obstacles they have to overcome including dysentery, water vapour and looting! We hope to see you there! If you would like to be added to the Science Cafe mailing list to receive updates about future events please contact community@cardiff.ac.uk

TRAINING

With the start of the new semester just around the corner it's time to kick off our schedule of IT training courses for the 2011/12 academic year.

We always wait until the busyness of the start of the academic year has died down and so our courses this year will be starting in w/b 10th October. Our schedule of courses is available at http://blogs.cf.ac.uk/insrveducation/en/category/IT+training+programme which will also update with availability of places for each course. We are currently working on some new additional courses

6

Department of Primary Care and Public Health that we hope to schedule before Christmas as so our current schedule only runs up until early

November but will be extended soon up to the end of the year.

All courses this year have been updated to the latest version of supported applications which means that our most popular courses, Microsoft applications, are now offered as Office 2007 versions.

Refer to our web pages at http://www.cf.ac.uk/insrv/educationandtraining/ittraining/courseprogramme.html

for details of course content and prerequisites.

If you would like to book onto any of these courses we will need to know your Cardiff University username and email address, a daytime contact number where we can get back to you and details of the course(s) you wish to book onto.

On receipt of your booking we will contact you to confirm your request with details of how to make the appropriate payment to cover the cost of attending the course, or courses, you have booked onto. Where your school or division is covering this cost we accept internal trade payments via the

Oracle finance system but we can also accept cash, cheque and credit card payments if you are paying for your own course booking.

To contact us, or to check availability of course places, send a message to insrveducation@cf.ac.uk

or give us a ring us on university extension 74698.

IT

Kaspersky Key Expiry: It seems that many users still believe they must upgrade to Sophos immediately, even if they haven't received the Kasperksy license renewal reminder on their desktop. Please reassure users that Sophos is *not* mandatory at this time - the University's

Kaspersky license will remain valid until next summer.

A script is being run frequently to automatically update the Kasperksy license key on standard imaged workstations as soon as they are switched on.

If anyone receives a 'key expiry' message then the automatic update hasn't worked for some reason - this may be because Kasperksy was installed on the machine via the web rather than the image, or it could be that the school has changed the admin password for its images. In either case, the advice is to manually uninstall Kasperksy and run the Sophos application object from

Start→Networked Applications→General Software→Trial Applications→Deploy Sophos.

If uninstalling Kasperksy and replacing it with Sophos will cause undue problems (for example if this has to be done on a large teaching lab) then please log a call with insrvConnect and the

Security Team will advise.
