Cardiff School of Engineering – PhD Studentship Advertisement Template Reference PA-13 Supervisors Dr Phillip Anderson, Dr Yevgen Melikhov Programme of Study PhD in Engineering Project Title Residual magnetism in manufacturing: theory, definition and practical principles Start Date 1st July 2013 Duration 3 years full time Source of Funding Cardiff School of Engineering/ Hirst Magnetic Instruments Ltd Advanced manufacturing is dependent upon ever tighter mechanical tolerances. Today, steel parts are mass manufactured to tolerances in some cases of +/- 0.25 microns. For reasons of quality and safety, the residual magnetism in components is a worldwide critical issue in order to avoid contamination through ferrous particles. Project Summary Advanced manufacturing in aerospace, medical, automotive and other industries specify acceptable magnetic levels, but there is currently a lack of theoretical understanding, suitable specifications, valid measurement techniques nor effective equipment to characterise them. This is a worldwide problem of global significance and as modern manufactured items become ever increasingly small, with closer and closer tolerances there is a need to address this issue. The research project will produce a clear theoretical understanding of the physics involved, units to define the physical reality, valid measurement techniques, and principles of instrumentation which will have the potential to alleviate a real and growing area of technical difficulties worldwide. Number of Awards 1 Amount of Funding The full award will cover fees at the Home/EU rate and will provide an annual stipend (£13,590 in 2012/13). Eligibility The studentship is open to Home, EU or Overseas candidates Academic Criteria Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first class degree or a good 2.1 and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent).
