Question: In one of the most frequently cited essays written about peer tutoring in writing
centers, Stephen North writes:
In a writing center the object is to make sure that writers, and not necessarily
their texts, are what get changed by instruction. In axiom form it goes like this:
our job is to produce better writers, not better writing. Any given project -- a class
assignment, a law school application letter, an encyclopedia entry, a dissertation
proposal -- is for the writer the prime, often the exclusive concern. That particular
text, its success or failure, is what brings them to talk to us in the first place. In
the center, though, we look beyond or through that particular project, that
particular text, and see it as an occasion for addressing our primary concern, the
process by which it is produced.
Please write an essay that responds to this passage from North. How does it intersect with your
own conceptions of tutoring in a writing center and with your own experiences as a writer? Feel
free to agree or disagree, or to complicate North's position. Please offer concrete detail from your
personal experiences as evidence for your perspective.
(3) Writing sample: Please include a sample of your best academic writing from a recent
college course. (Creative writing, personal narratives, response papers, or journal
entries will NOT be accepted.)

The deadline to apply for the Winter 2016 Peer Writing Consultant Program is
12:00 Noon, Monday, October 26, 2015.
How to submit your application:
1. Go to https://ctools.umich.edu/ and log in.
2. Click on “Membership” in the sidebar, and then click on “Joinable Sites” at the top.
3. In the search bar, search for “Sweetland PWC Program.” In the worksite list, the
recruitment site should populate. Click on “join” under the site name.
4. Click on “Drop Box” in the sidebar, and in the “Add” drop-down menu, click “Upload
Files.” Upload all of these application materials as ONE .pdf file:
 Your peer tutor application form, Essay, writing sample and an unofficial transcript as
a single .pdf file, named according to these conventions:
“Lastname_Firstname_PWCappW16”; and
 If you have difficulty including your transcript with the entire application packet,
upload it as a separate PDF file with the following format:
“Lastname_Firstname_transcriptW16”

You must ask an instructor familiar with your qualifications to write a short letter on your behalf.
The instructor can email the letter to pwcmilestones@umich.edu stating your name and that
they are writing in support your application to the Peer Writing Consultant Program.
