VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION ROLE: Running, Challenge and Mass Participation Events Intern (unpaid) REPORTING TO: Matt Smith – Events Fundraising Officer - Mass Participation Lizzie Griffiths – Events Fundraising Assistant REMUNERATION: Reimbursement of travel expenses within Greater London, lunch allowance of up to £6/day (where the working day is more than 6 hrs) LOCATION: WaterAid head office (Vauxhall, London SE11) TIME COMMITMENT: 3-4 days per week for 3 months START DATE: December 2015 TO APPLY: Please send your CV and a 1 page cover letter outlining your suitability for the role to lizziegriffiths@wateraid.org BACKGROUND: WaterAid's aim is to help some of the world’s poorest people to enjoy the benefits that safe water and basic sanitation can bring. We work with local partners, who understand local issues, and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real need. We also campaign locally and internationally to change policy and practice and ensure water and sanitation’s vital role in reducing poverty is recognized. PURPOSE OF ROLE: This volunteer role has been created to support WaterAid’s Events team. The main purpose of this post is to help maximise WaterAid’s income from our main running and mass participation events. The Events team have a busy and varied workload, so this role will suit someone who has strong administrative skills, and who is able to prioritise work well. We need someone who is able to hit the ground running and who has the ability to use their organisational skills and office experience to really get stuck in. We have ambitious plans to develop our running, cycling and mass participation events. These plans rest on us maintaining a high level of supporter care, something that this role will be pivotal in helping us to deliver. This role is ideal for someone wishing to pursue a career in Community & Events Fundraising. EXAMPLES OF TASKS: To send out fundraising packs to all the participants that sign up to take part in our upcoming events and ensure all participants receive a call to welcome them onto the team. To manage the supporter response on Just Giving and Virgin Money Giving to WaterAid’s winter campaign; Deliver Life. Running, Challenge and Mass Participation Events Intern (unpaid) To maintain regular contact with these participants in the build up to the events to ensure their training and fundraising is on track To take responsibility for promoting these events using social media such as Facebook and twitter. To research possible sponsors and volunteers for these events. To research into marketing channels to help promote WaterAid’s event places. To work on an ongoing photo database project. To maintain and update the Raisers Edge database, including inputting enquiries, new contact details, event participation and income monitoring. Making sure this is up to date at all times. To provide on the day support at the Brighton Half Marathon in February. To work with the Mass Participation Events officer to market WaterAid’s own events via social media and other marketing outlets. To liaise directly with mass participation event teams to ensure they’re fully registered and ready to take part in the event. RELEVANT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Experience Experience of working in an office environment. Experience of managing multiple tasks to deadlines and prioritising own workload. Experience of using Social Media, e.g Twitter and Facebook Skills and qualities An interest in events and fundraising. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Confidence to deal with supporters face to face and by telephone. Excellent organisation skills and attention to detail Ability to provide support to individuals, organisations and companies at all levels. To have a methodical approach to work with the ability to initiate, implement and complete tasks to a high standard and with minimum supervision. Good IT skills – competent at word and excel Other Endless enthusiasm, energy and the ability to work under own initiative and as part of a team. Interest in people; able to develop relationships with a wide range of individuals and to convey to them the value of their support.
