Students will be able to identify famous people, landmarks, and food that the midwest region is known for NCSS Theme/Sunshine State Standards SS.3.G.2.2: Identify the five regions of the United States. SS.3.G.2.3: Label the states in each of the five regions of the United States. SS.3.G.2.5: Identify natural and man-made landmarks in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Student Activities & Procedures Teacher Activities/Student Activities Anticipatory set 1. Students will sample some cheese and thick crust pizza. 2. Students will guess what region this food is from by pointing to the region on the class map. 3. Ask students to describe the difference between thick and thin crust pizza. 4. Have students label the states and capitals on a map of the Midwest region. Activity Outline 1. Pass out the travel brochures for the midwest states. 2. Have students look through the brochures with partners. 3. Students will find the capital of the state they are assigned and they will identify two state parks or landmarks. 4. Students will write their answers on the board when they are finished. 5. Go over the answers as a class. 6. Show the students the Michigan glass. 7. Tell the students that Michigan is surrounded by Social Studies Lesson Plan Template three of the Great Lakes. 8. Ask the students to name all the Great Lakes and label them on a map. 9. Have students get back with their partners. 10.Have the students make famous people cards for the midwest 11. Students will find out the state that the person is associated with and how they became associated with that state. 12. Students will share their famous people cards with the class. 13. Have the students label the states and capitals on a map of the midwest region. Visual aids will be used. Provide each ESOL/SLD student with a labeled map of the midwest region. Gifted/Talented: These students can pick a state in the midwest region and research the history behind the state’s flag, bird, or motto. These students can make their own brochures for the midwest region.
