This new molecular diagnostic assay is the FilmArray Blood Culture Identification (BCID) panel from BioFire Diagnostics. In only about an hour, and with an overall sensitivity and specificity of 97% and 99%, respectively, the FDA-cleared BCID panel identifies 24 gram-positive, gram-negative, and yeast pathogens, as well as 3 genetic determinants of antimicrobial resistance. The BCID panel can significantly reduce the time required to report results from positive blood culture in many cases of blood infection and sepsis. Timely identification of blood pathogens can be used in conjunction with sepsis and antibiotic stewardship best practices to reduce the time to appropriate pharmacotherapy. Please note that while the BCID panel does include some antimicrobial resistance information, this new test does not include susceptibility data. The FilmArray BCID panel simultaneously tests for the following: Gram-Positive Bacteria Enterococcus Listeria monocytogenes Staphylococcus Staphylococcus aureus Streptococcus Streptococcus agalactiae Streptococcus pneumoniae Streptococcus pyogenes Gram-Negative Bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii Haemophilus influenzae Neisseria meningitidis Pseudomonas aeruginosa Enterobacteriaceae Enterobacter cloacae complex Escherichia coli Klebsiella oxytoca Klebsiella pneumoniae Proteus Serratia marcescens Yeast Candida albicans Candida glabrata Candida krusei Candida parapsilosis Candida tropicalis Antimicrobial Resistance Genes mecA - methicillin resistance vanA/B - vancomycin resistance KPC - carbapenem resistance Requirements to run the FilmArray BCID panel: Sample type: Positive blood culture Sample volume: 100μl How to order the FilmArray BCID Panel: You will not need to order this test. This test is now part of our blood culture testing algorithm. When appropriate, we will automatically run it on positive blood cultures. Turnaround Time From the time of a positive blood culture, it is our goal to have results back to you in 2 hours.
