The Honorable Senator Pat Steadman, Chair

District 31 – Arapahoe & Denver Counties

Legislative Services Building

200 East 14th Avenue, 3rd Floor

Denver, CO 80203

Senator Steadman,

In response to Gov. John Hickenlooper’s Proposed FY 2013-2014 Budget, I would like to express my

support in favor of a statewide behavioral crisis response system. Behavioral health is an often forgotten basic human need, affecting all other aspects of a person’s ability to function effectively within the community. Addressing this need in its early stages will make a significant impact in preventing behavioral health issues from disturbing the public community, saturating emergency departments, and inhibiting law enforcement from addressing imminent safety issues.

As a member of the Joint Budget Committee, you were provided a briefing of a proposed statewide

Crisis Response System within the Department of Human Services (Item R3-C). The item discusses a

$10.3 million request for the instatement of a statewide crisis hotline and five walk-in crisis centers.

A significant and progressive approach to the aforementioned behavioral health issues in Colorado, I highly encourage you to vote in favor of this request. I support the right of every citizen in our community to have immediate access to mental health and substance abuse support; this proposal will allow Colorado citizens to receive the care they need, when they need it.

Being a member of the Colorado Legislature is a job requiring personal sacrifice and challenging assessments – your contribution in our community is one of value, and is vastly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter – your support for this request is one that will conclusively make a positive impact in our community.

Sincerely,
