Spelling Rules of the Week
Unit 3 Week 1
Closed vs. Vowel-consonant-e syllables: When a syllable has a pattern of a vowel, followed by
a consonant and then followed by an e, it is called a vowel-consonant-e syllable. The e makes
the vowel say its name.
Examples:
hope
rope
rule
pine
When a syllable is not followed by an e, it is a closed syllable
Examples:
contact = con / tact
spot
The /k/ Sound: The /k/ sound is heard in words using the long vowel and short vowel sounds.
When a short vowel sound is heard, a ck is used for the /k/ sound. When a long vowel sound is
heard, a k is used for the /k/ sound.
Examples:
lick
vs.
like (becomes a v-consonant-e syllable)
/Z/ Sound: When the letter s is in between two vowels in a word, it can say the /z/ sound or the
/s/ sound. You need to say them out loud to see which one sounds right.
Examples:
nose
/z/
rose
/z/
chase
/s/
base
/s/
Compound Words: Words that can be divided into two separate words. This makes them multisyllabic words (more than one syllable)
Examples: fireman = fire
man
basketball = basket
ball
