Syllables and Affixes- Sort #16 Spelling Test for the Green Dear Parents, The spelling skill that your child is working on this week involves open and closed syllable words. An open syllable word contains a long vowel sound such as in the word hu/man (V/CV). Closed syllable words contain short-vowel sounds as in the word riv/er (VC/V). The VVCV juncture pattern is a variation of the open syllable pattern since the syllable still ends with a long vowel sound, as in reason. I know this is confusing, but the children seem to get it! I would encourage your child to identify the words by listening for whether the words have a short or long sound rather than relying on where the syllable breaks the word. They will be more accurate. Following are the words in this week’s sort: V/CV (long) human pilot frozen student humor lazy music Word Wall Words through wasn’t kindness follow valentine VC/V (short) wagon river visit never planet lemon finish seven present second minute VVCV (long) reason meeting peanut leader sneaker easy
