Forming your own opinion As students in an extremely technological age that is advancing at the speed of light, it is probably hard to imagine the days before all this technology. Based on what you have learned about the arts and crafts movement and the industrial revolution, try to pictures these ideals in today’s society. Your task is to decide if you believe in the importance of quality, hand made goods, or if the advance of technology is more important in creating quality in our lives. So basically, would you prefer to live by the ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement in today’s society, or would you like to see a resurgence of even more advances like the Industrial Revolution? Creating your artwork When you have decided your position you will create a collage that reflects your opinion. A collage is a work of formal art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. The requirements for the image are: You must include a quote that reflects your belief (begin by looking at quotes from whichever movement you choose, perhaps one of them will embody your thoughts. If not, try to stick with the topic you are trying to communicate and find another source.) You must use means that reflect your opinion. (If you prefer hand-made quality things, you should utilize drawing or other means of creating your image by hand. If you prefer technology, you may use this means as your mode of creating imagery. Don’t fret, I would allow you to trace images if you are not confident in your drawing skills and this alone would sway your choice of position.) This will be a 2 dimensional collage. Think about how we increased the creativity and challenge level by layering multiple patterns, colors, and textures over each other, combining in text. There cannot be white space inbetween collaged images, white space should be used SPARINGLY and PURPOSEFULLY. You can collage any type of image whether it is printed, found from a magazine, drawn, painted, cut, or torn. You can create fields of color by gathering different scraps of the same color, or paint a piece of paper and cut it into pieces. You may use images as a whole or use small pieces of various images to construct one image. Consider how typography sends a message. If you are trying to embody technology, script or handwritten text may not get your message across. Remember, this is an artwork. What needs to be done in order for it to be aesthetically pleasing and gallery worthy? Our struggle as artists is to portray our thoughts and opinions in images, not just by writing an explanation in words. Luckily, the quote you choose will be the first clue the reader has to your thoughts.
