Andy’s
Corner
For those of you
who don’t know
me, I’m Andy
King, general
manager of
Republic Services
for all
operations in the
Northeast
Florida market. It is very exciting to see
this project come to fruition. We have
put lots of time, research and monetary
investments behind the recycling
operation and we have the highest
hopes that RS Recycling Center will
make a huge impact in the regional
marketplace. A true single-stream
recycling facility is really a game changer
in the market and we look forward to
helping municipalities and organizations
meet their recycling goals.
John Schultz, the new facility
manager, is exactly the kind of
professional we needed for this
operation. He has been overseeing the
construction of the new facility and we are
excited to welcome him to Jacksonville
and to this new project as we open the
doors.
Republic Services Recycling
Center – A State-of-the-Art
Single Stream Facility
Republic Services of Florida, dba Southland Waste Systems and Seaboard Waste
Systems, is thrilled to introduce its newest operating division, Republic Services Recycling
Center. Located at 7000 Imeson Road just off Interstate 295, the facility itself is 70,000
square feet and has a footprint of 14 acres. It’s the first Regional Materials Recovery
Facility (MRF) to be designed and built from the ground up in company history.
A
true
single-stream
facility, this will be one of
the most technologically
advanced
processing
lines on the East Coast.
The design includes 3
optical
sorters, used
for sorting plastics 1
through 7 and it even
has an optical sorter
for aseptic packaging,
which you see in boxed
juices and boxed soups.
Screens, magnets and
other equipment identify and separate different kinds of paper, metals, glass and
plastics.
A This technology contributes to its ability to process 35 tons every hour, making it
easierpto put these materials back into new products in a short timeframe.

surrounding regional market areas. Construction will complete on or around April 2.

Meet John Schultz – Facility Manager
Why Should I Recycle?
Meet John Schultz, a recent transplant from Fort Lauderdale. Having been with
Increasing recycling provides tangible
benefits. Recycling not only reduces
the waste that ends up in our landfills.
Recycling allows us to conserve vital
natural resources. Recycling means
cleaner land, air and water and overall
better health.
Republic Services managing the EnviroCycle Materials Recovery Facility there for
many years, he comes to Jacksonville with 26 years experience in the recycling and
commodities industry. John Schultz embraces his next venture with RS Recycling
Center in Jacksonville and is excited about his new position as Division Manager.
What’s your biggest achievement?
Hopefully it’s yet to come.
What’s the most important issue facing recycling over the next 5 years?
Honestly from a recycling standpoint, one of the most important issues is educating
residential and commercial customers. Our technology in the recycling field is
expanding at a rapid pace. We need to stay ahead of the curve in the technology
race to serve the needs of our customers so they can expand their current recycling
programs. Our recent example of this is our ability to accept aseptic packaging, juice
and milk boxes, something that has not previously been allowed in residential or
school recycling programs.
What did you want to be growing up?
I can honestly say after watching my grandfather and my father work in the recycling
business I knew I wanted to be third generation doing the same thing.
How do you spend your free time?
I spend my free time looking for ways to recycle different commodities…seriously.
What are you most excited about in this new venture with RS Recycling Center
and moving to Jacksonville?
The most exciting thing about our new facility is the growth potential we have to
service not only Jacksonville and North Florida but the needs of South Georgia and
the Pan Handle area as well.
Benefits of Recycling
The ABCs of Single Stream Recycling
Single-stream recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers, plastics, metals,
and other containers are mixed together at homes and businesses instead of being
sorted into separate material types.
Advantages include reduced sorting effort which has been shown to increase diversion
rates dramatically in cities and towns across the county. Another major advantage is
adding new materials to the list of recyclables that are accepted such as more types of
paper, plastics and aseptic packaging.
• Recycling protects and expands US
manufacturing jobs and increases US
competitiveness.
• Recycling reduces the need for
landfilling and incineration.
• Recycling prevents pollution caused
by the manufacturing of products
from virgin materials.
• Recycling saves energy.
• Recycling decreases emissions.
• Recycling conserves natural resources
such as timber, water and minerals.
• Recycling helps sustain the
environment for future generations.
