University Libraries Strategic Diversity Plan – 2014 – 2018 Draft 2 – 03-4-14 At UNCG, one of the core values of the institution is inclusiveness as outlined in the current strategic plan: “Inclusiveness – A welcoming and inclusive academic community, based on open dialogue and shared governance, offers a culture of caring with visible, meaningful representation of differences.” The University Libraries seeks to promote and provide a culture of diversity and inclusiveness for all library patrons through its collections and services. University Libraries defines diversity as: The vibrant variety of human characteristics that combine to shape each one of us. These characteristics include not only the familiar categories of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, but also: age, cognitive style, disability, economic, educational and geographic background, languages spoken, marital status, political affiliation, religious beliefs and more. Valuing diversity means recognizing that we are all shaped by numerous and varied factors, making each of us uniquely qualified to contribute to the collective goal of the libraries -- to serve the diverse information needs of our diverse user groups.* The Libraries’ definition of diversity is broad and this is intentional. As the student population of UNCG becomes more varied and diverse and in keeping with the University’s Quality and Enhancement Plan (QEP) which is Global Engagement, it crucial the Libraries are seen by students, faculty and staff as a unit that values diversity and inclusion. As an example of the commitment to diversity, University Libraries has created a Diversity Resident Librarian program, which is a post-graduate fellowship designed to increase diversity within academic librarianship. There have been three Diversity Residents and is committed to continuing the program. In an effort to increase diversity within librarianship, University Libraries has partnered with the Department of Library and Information Studies (LIS) for three Institute of Museum and Library Studies to host the ACE (Academic and Cultural Enhancement) Scholars program which provides tuition, a stipend and professional development support from professional librarians to graduate LIS students that are primarily from underrepresented populations. *http://library.uncg.edu/info/diversity/ 1 The Libraries Committee has worked to create strategic plan based on five goals: Strategic Goal #1 – Ensure that the Libraries’ environment is inclusive and inviting to staff and customers.
