ATHLETE LIFESTYLE AND PERFORMANCE
John Underwood – Sport Science Educator and Activist
Social issues that negatively impact performance potentially plague an athlete’s lifestyle into
early adulthood. These social issues clearly impact both the mental and physical performance
and future outcomes of our athletes. In this session, John Underwood shares the impacts and
effects of negative social behaviour choices and outlines the lifestyle changes that an athlete
must make to succeed into the future. This session assists coaches and athletes in establishing
a perspective on optimal performance and how the choices that an athlete makes determine
future outcomes.
John Underwood is a former NCAA All-American Athlete, and international-level distance runner
and has coached and advised more than two dozen Olympians including World and Olympic
Champions. John has worked with nearly all sport federations including the NCAA, ECAC, NHL,
the US Olympic Committee, Sport Canada and the International Olympic Committee.
TALENT IDENTIFICATION
Paula Jardine, Canadian Sport Centre - Calgary

The transition from provincial team athlete to Senior national team athlete can be a difficult
one for many athletes. On its own, performance as a Junior is often a poor indicator of an
athlete’s potential to succeed at elite senior level. This session is intended to help coaches and
provincial coaches improve their ability to develop athletes capable of progressing into senior
national programs through better identification of those athletes with the greatest potential to
progress and strategies for optimizing the potential for athlete’s success at the elite level.
Paula Jardine is the Talent Identification and Systems Integration Manager at the Canadian
Sport Centre – Calgary. She has worked in the field of Talent Identification for ten years. Her
career began working for British Rowing as a Talent Development Coach identifying adolescents
with the potential to be Olympic athletes through a school’s based talent testing initiative.
While working for Scottish Gymnastics she established a talent transfer initiative targeting
gymnasts retiring from the national squad system. Before returning to Canada, Paula was the
manager of the South West Regional Talent Development Centre a joint initiative between the
University of Bath and Sport England.

Canada Summer Games

Join our provincial coaches as they provide a year in review of the 2012 – 2013 Swim Season, as
well as highlights from experiences at the FINA World Championships and FISU World Student
Games. Also a summary of Team Alberta at the 2013 Canada Games by Richard Millns.
THE SCIENCE OF SWIMMING FUNDAMENTALS
Allan Wrigley, PhD, Senior Sport Biomechanist & Eugene Liang, BHsc, RMT, CSCS
Sunday, 9:00 am – noon – Three Sessions
Session 1: Foundational Skills and the Characteristics of World Class Swimming:
This session will focus on outlining the core technical characteristics for swimming skills that is
consistently observed at the International level. In additional to the technical aspects of
swimming skills, the foundation al movement patterns associated with these skills will be
covered.
Session 2: Exercises for Developing Fundamental Functional Capacity and their Relationship to
Performance: This session will be interactive where basic functional capacity exercise and
exercise progressions will be demonstrated. The exercises will be related back to real-world
examples of International level swimming performances.
Session 3: Integrating Fundamental Dry land and Skill Analysis into an Annual Plan: This session
will focus on how to take the knowledge gained in the previous sessions and incorporate them
into your program’s annual plan.
Dr. Allan Wrigley received both H.B. and M.Sc. Degrees in Kinesiology from Lakehead University,
with his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies coming from the University of New Brunswick. Dr.
Wrigley has been working with Swimming Canada’s National Senior Program since 2006 and
has been with the team at every manor International swim meet since 2008. Most recently he
was the Biomechanist and IST Lead for Swimming Canada at the 2012 London Olympics. Dr.
Wrigley’s focus in on the technical analysis and training of all swimming skills, but in particular
with starts, turns, and underwater kicking. On top of his work in the daily training environment
and at International swim meets, Dr. Wrigley serves as the IST Director for Swimming Canada’s
National high performance program. In this capacity, he oversees and manages the National
sport science and medicine program across Canada.
Eugene Liang studied at Simon Fraser University in Kinesiology as well as the Health Sciences
faculty at Thompson Rivers University. Eugene has been the massage therapist and strength
and conditioning coach for the Vancouver National Swim Centre since 1999 and more recently
with the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific. He has also been part of Swimming Canada’s IST since
2007 for all major competitions, as well as the Canadian Olympic Team staff in 2008 and 2012.
With his recent move to the Victoria Academy of Swimming, Eugene has been appointed as the
Strength and Conditioning Lead as well as the Paramedical Lead for Swimming Canada. His role
at the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific has also evolved into the Health Sciences Lead. In these
capacities, Eugene is responsible for developing sustainable health models for Canadian high
performance athletes and overseeing the national directive for strength and conditioning; as
well as paramedical services for Swimming Canada.
Novice Competitive Coach Session:
BASIC BASICA BASICS AND RANDOM BITS OF WISDOM
Lorna Snow, University of Calgary Swim Club
Join Lorna has she shares her experience with returning to the “basics” of teaching
fundamental swimming skills to novice and development swimmers, while sharing her years of
wisdom and experiences as a development coach.
Lorna Snow is the Head Coach in the Development Program at Churchill pool. She is one of the
most experienced and educated coaches of young swimmers in Canada. She has been
committed to UCSC for over 30 years. Lorna has a Master's degree in Physical Education from
the University of Western Ontario. She taught Therapeutic Recreation at Mount Royal University
for 25 years and continues to coach for the joy of the interaction with the children. Lorna is a
certified NCCP Level II swim coach. She has a passion and enthusiasm for teaching excellent
technique, and encouraging young swimmers to love the sport and have confidence in their
abilities. Her swimmers learn the value of respect, commitment and hard work.
Age Group Competitive Coach Session:
DEVELOPING A STRONG AGE GROUP PROGRAM
Carl Simonson
Saturday 10:30 am – 12:15 pm
Developing a strong Age Group Program does not just happen. Thoughts around the
components of building a strong foundation need to be in place including: structure,
relationships (board, parents and swimmers), staffing and the technical aspects of the sport of
swimming. Carl will share his insights experiences and knowledge in creating a top rank age
group program. In addition, there will be an opportunity for discussions and questions to other
high performing age group programs in the province.
Carl Simonson is currently the Head Age Group Coach with the University of Calgary Swim Club.
Prior to joining UCSC Carl was the Head Coach of the Edmonton Olympian Swim Club for eight
years. During that time, Carl was able to develop one of the top age group clubs in the Canada.
Fostering a positive team environment with a focus on training, technique, and the employment
of sport science philosophy. Carl’s success was seen locally, provincially and nationally.

Leslie Sproule
Saturday 10:30 am – 12:15 pm
The descriptions and desired actions of the new FINA 12 & Under, 13-15 and Junior figures for
2013-2017 will be overviewed. This will be followed by a review of the Provincial Stream
figures for all age groups. Please note that closer to the conference a more definitive time
breakdown for this session will be available.
Leslie Sproule has over 25 years of coaching experience including Olympic Games, World
Championships, Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cups, National
Championships and Canada Games. Leslie has been a head coach with the Edmonton Aurora
Synchronized Swim club, has been the High Performance Director for Synchro Canada and is
International Synchro Consultant for countries all over the world. Leslie is a Level IV certified
coach and has been on provincial and national coaches committees.
The Importance of Music Selection/Efficient Pool Usage - Kari McKnight & another TBD –
Synchro Alberta Officials/Kimberly Ashton – Killarney Synchro
Saturday 1:30 – 3:00 pm
This session will be split into two shorter interactive sessions with presentations and
discussions on the value and effect of routine music selection as well as ideas and tips on how
to maximize the pool space, drill and activities for tough to use areas and maximizing music
time.
Kari McKnight has been an official since 1993 and in 2007 became a Level 3 National level
official. She is also a former synchronized swimming coach and served on the Synchro Alberta
Board for 8 years. Kari was the Swimmer Development Chair and the Coaches Representative.
Kimberly Ashton is a Level 3 certified coach and for the last 17 years has been coaching with
Killarney Synchro. She has coached athletes from 6-18 years of age at the recreational,
provincial and national level. Recently Kim also became an NCCP Coach Evaluator for Synchro
Alberta.

THE IN'S AND OUT'S OF YOUR CLUB'S INSURANCE COVERAGE
Maggie Cammidge CIP, CRM Account Executive - Lloydsadd

What exactly does our Insurance cover? As boards turn over, new board members often ask
this question. Join Maggie Cammidge in this informative session that covers the coverage that
clubs receive through their insurance programs with Swim Alberta and Synchro Alberta.
Maggie is the Account Executive at Lloydsadd Insurance. Lloydsadd is the insurance provider for
both Synchro Alberta and Swim Alberta.
COACHES – EMPLOYMENT CONSIDERATIONS FROM START TO FINISH
Steve Indig, LLB – Sport Law and Strategy Group

This information presented will aid club boards in understanding hiring techniques, screening,
employment agreements and termination of coaches and other club employees. Participants
will also learn about effective screening policies and the associated ethical situations that may
arise while trying to protect athletes and employment relations.
SO YOU'VE GOT A COMPLAINT? (Complaint and Discipline Management)
Steve Indig, LLB –Sport Law and Strategy Group
Saturday 1:30 – 3:00 pm
This workshop will focus on drafting policies to help ensure that clubs are prepared to deal with
complaints, discipline issues and disputes legally, fairly and without bias. Clubs have a legal
duty to ensure that internal tribunals are governed within the rules of natural justice. This
session will cover those rules and the effective use of internal tribunals.
Steve began his career with Sport Law and Strategy Group in 2003 immediately after being
called to the bar as a lawyer. In fewer than ten years, Steve has worked with over one hundred
national, provincial, and local sport organizations to provide consulting services related to
governance, employment, contracts, policies, disputes, and privacy. He is a regular guest
speaker and presenter at AGMs. Conferences, and workshops, and has also acted as and
adjudicator on issues related to eligibility, conduct of athletes, coaches and membership.
Steve graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelors of Recreation degree and a
successful five-year career as a varsity athlete in swimming. Steve attended three CIS National
Championships, was named CIS athlete of th month, and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Trials.
He continues to be involved in swimming as a master’s swimmer (Canadian Masters Swimming
medalist) and a coach at the Vaughan Aquatic Club. Steve was inducted into the Yarmouth,
Nova Scotia Sport Fall of Fame in 2007.
During the early years of his career, Steve also was a certified sports agent representing
professional athletes. Steve was certified by the NFL, CFL, MLS, and FIFA as an agent. He
continues to be involved in sport as a volunteer coach, referee, and avid basketball player.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY AND CONTROLS FOR SPORT CLUBS

Does your club board have policies and procedures in place for finances? Do you or a member
of your board sign blank cheques? Does your board have a system to approve annual budgets
and capital purchases? This workshop is designed for club board members who are wondering
about financial controls for their club. The workshop will teach about internal controls and
financial policies that should be in place to reduce risk to your club.
PRACTICAL STRATEGIC BUSINESS PLANNING FOR SPORT CLUBS

A strategic plan is an internal visionary document that explains how you know the work you’re
doing is the right work, how you will do it better over the next one to three years including
planning for anticipated changes in your club and within the sport community. This workshop
will share useful templates and processes that your club can utilize to develop and implement a
strategic business plan ensuring that the goals of the board, club administrators and head
coaches are aligned and have clarity around goals and priorities.
Leslie is a native born Calgarian and believes in “Improving Neighbourhood Life in Calgary”.
Leslie is currently the Executive Director for the Federation of Calgary Communities a support
organization for the 150 Calgary based Community Associations. She has worked in the not-forprofit sector for 24 years with fourteen years’ experience in various executive director roles. In
addition, she has served as a community association president for 5 years and remains active as
a volunteer for a variety of organizations.
Leslie is a proven voluntary sector leader with experience in strategic, business and operational
planning. She is skilled in developing new programs and initiatives convening and collaborating
groups volunteer and human resource management, fundraising and increasing organizational
effectiveness. Leslie is seen by her peers as an effective leader, relationship builder,
communicator, manager and change agent. Leslie holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Psychology and Management, a Certificate in Human Resource Development and a Masters
Degree in Management focusing on Voluntary Sector Leadership.
