We are working towards our 4 “W.O.W. Wonders of Water” badges. On April 22nd we will celebrate Earth Day and in honor of this festive day, we wanted to try to make a difference in our community in Warren, N.J. As Girl Scouts, we have been taught to leave a place better than we found it and we are asking for your help with our small, but significant goal. Let’s ban all plastic water bottles for one week in April! We challenge you and look for your support in our effort from April 22nd – April 29th of this year. Can you do it? For one week, would you please carry a reusable water bottle and refill it with the clean water from your own tap? We know plastic water bottles are convenient, but they are also very wasteful. Global consumption of plastic water bottles increases 10% every year. Here are some interesting facts: - Doctors tell us to drink 8 glasses of water a day. If you took it from the tap it would equal about 49 cents per year. The same amount of water in plastic water bottles would equal about $1400 per year. - Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles, but only recycled 38. With 50 billion plastic water bottles used by our country, only 23% were recycled. That’s 38 billion water bottles (about $1 billion worth of plastic) was wasted. - In the U.S.A., 24% of bottled water sold is either Pepsi’s Aquafina or Coke’s Dasani. Both brands are bottled, purified municipal water. But for one week in April, won’t you please encourage your co-workers to support our Brownie Goal and to lighten your carbon footprint a bit by banning plastic water bottles in your work environment? We hope you will accept our challenge. We love Warren, N.J. and appreciate all you do for our great town. - Woodland Brownie Troop #65918 For further information about the Green Fair, please contact Ila Gillenwater at 908-868-1984 or irgillenwater@hotmail.com
