In our daily life we come frequently come across batteries- Car Battery, Inverter Battery, UPS Battery and many more. These are instances of simple use of batteries.

But can we imagine how many batteries are used in a Telephone exchange, cell Phone towers, Transport Operators, Railways or UPS Room in a typical Data Centre? Could be from hundreds to thousands! And these batteries get replaced at periodic interval ranging from just few months to 3 years (sometimes more). All this costs money and higher the capacity of the battery, higher the cost of replacement.

Old batteries need to disposed-off on a very careful manner else it could cause immense environmental damage.

But do we really need to dispose-off the used batteries or can we extend the life of these batteries thus saving cost and saving environment?

What happens to the batteries?

A Lead Acid Battery is made up of multiple plates of lead in a case filled with diluted sulphuric acid (Electrolyte)). During the normal use of the battery, it discharges, some of the lead from the plates combines with the electrolyte to make lead sulphate deposits on the surface of the plates as crystals (as electrons leave the battery as electricity). This process is called sulphation. One has to remember that lead sulphate crystal formation or the sulphation is a natural process.

During the normal processof charging of the batteries, part of this sulphation process is reversed with the lead sulphate crystals partially breaking down. BUT, each time a battery goes through this discharge/charge cycle some of the lead sulphate crystals remain and over time harden, thicken, and grow over the surface of the lead plates. These crystals of Lead sulphate on the plates of a battery reduce the conductivity of the plates (act as insulator), thus reducing the total area of the plate in contact with electrolyte. In essence the battery capacity is reduced and over time this will result in a battery which cannot hold much charge – i.e. effectively a dead battery. Result is replacement and cost and potential damage to environment.

Introducing the Battery Regenerator

Using a special algorithm, the Battery Regenerator provides variable duty-cycle current pulses to the Battery. These pulses help in breaking the lead sulphate crystals back to their basic components and the battery cells regain their capacity. The Battery Regenerator restores the capacity in stages and over a period of few hours the capacity is restored. The regeneration time depends on the capacity (Ah) of the battery and the condition of the battery. It is necessary to test the electrical and mechanical condition of the battery to decide if the battery can be regenerated or not.

The entire regeneration is an electrical process. There is no need to add any additional chemical.
