February 2010 TIP OF THE MONTH For Coaches Camps and Clinics New Legislation In sports other than football camps or clinics must be conducted on the institution’s campus or within a 100-mile radius of the institution’s campus. (Proposal 2009-51-B) In football, camps shall be conducted in the state in which the institution is located, or if outside the state, within a 50-mile radius of the campus. These camps/clinics may be conducted only during the months of June, July, and August or any calendar week that includes days of those months. (Proposal 2009-52) FCS football coaches may be employed at privately owned camps at any location during June, July, or August. (Proposal 2009-52) Reminders: Camp Brochures – 13.4.1.1 (c) Brochures may be e-mailed to prospects of any age. However only junior and senior year prospects may receive a personalized e-mail invitation to attend an institution’s camps. Brochures are restricted to a single two-sided sheet, not to exceed 17 by 22 inches in size when opened in full Camp brochures may be provided to a prospective student-athlete at any time Prospects may not be employed at an institution’s camps or clinics. Student-athlete pictures may only appear on the counselor page of a camp or clinic brochure. Former student-athletes working the camp may have their picture in the camp counselor section. If they are not working the camp their picture should not be used unless there is a direct connection (e.g., former camper or former counselor) Team championships, records, individual awards, and other accomplishments may only be listed in the coaching bios ___________________________________________________________________________ Special Exceptions for Basketball camps Camps must include an NCAA eligibility education component PSA for men’s basketball purposes includes any student that has started 7th grade Camps may not employ any individual that coaches or is associated with a PSA as a result of their participation in basketball to perform speaking duties other than those of a camp counselor An institution’s coach or non-coaching staff members with responsibilities specific to basketball may be employed only at their institutions camps or clinics
