June 2015 Central Middle School Stirling, NJ Eighth Grade Summer Reading Assignment Words are ideas…. Reading is learning…. Learning is growing…. During summer vacation, most young people have many more opportunities for free reading— self-improvement and recreational reading – than is available during the busy months of the school year. Students who use this time productively show impressive results. They learn more. They get better grades later. They show improved aptitude on standardized tests. They are admitted to more selective colleges. They bring wider knowledge to their employers. In short, the depth and breadth of their reading may directly influence their career ladders. There are many kinds of reading. Sports pages and romance novels are two kinds. But the “best sellers” of today and yesterday, such as those on the following pages, combine high interest levels with real self-improvement. Students entering eighth grade are required to read one book this summer: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. The assignment for Anne Frank will be an in-class, open-ended assessment to be given the first week of September. In addition, students should keep track of other books they chose to read. There is no assigned list of books. Keep a record of all of the books that you read this summer, not just the required one. Parents or guardians are asked to sign next to each book completed; students should bring this form to school on the first day of school. We hope that students will find their summer reading experience rewarding and enjoyable, so much so that they will continue to read independently throughout the school year. Happy summer and happy reading!!
