Summative Assignment for The Outsiders
Since you all know that three important characters die in the novel, you will have the
opportunity to show what you know or think about each character. Using Microsoft
Publisher, you will put together an Obituary Page with all three characters since their
deaths happened during a short time frame. Some of the information required will not be
known from the book. This is your chance to be creative, but don’t be too creative
because if it is too crazy, you will lose points. Remember, a newspaper does not waste
space, so you will have to add other pieces of information relevant to the times to fill in
the page like advertisements, other articles, etc. Each obituary should contain the
following information:
1. Deceased First Name, Middle Initial and Last Name, offset by commas, followed
by Age.
2. State, City and Zip (don’t use specific street address of deceased to keep thieves
away)
3. Cause of Death
4. Place of Death
5. Date of death (Guesstimate – you should know the length of time between each
death)
6. Occupation – (student, horse racer, etc.)
7. Hobbies or Community Involvement (be creative, but not too creative)
8. Left behind / Survivors – normally listed in the order of names and city resides –
parents, brothers and sisters, etc.)
9. Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers (Optional)
10. Contributions, other memorials, and favorite charity
There are templates on Microsoft Publisher that allow you to type newsletter pages that
look like a newspaper including pictures.
