Students Honored at District Red Ribbon Ceremony
Dozens of students were honored for their pledge to remain tobacco, alcohol and
substance abuse free and for standing up against peer pressure and bullying during the
annual Bullitt County Public Schools Red Ribbon ceremony.
The audience of proud relatives practically overflowed the Roby Elementary School
gymnasium.
“This is a great problem to have,” said District Safe Schools Coordinator Sarah Hardin.
“Thank you for your support of these students’ efforts.”
The program included the history of Red Ribbon and Safe Schools Week by DARE
Officer Becky Hill; recognition of the Very Important Partners (VIPs) who can be seen on
posters across the county; a special video performance of Scream created by North Bullitt
High School students; and recognition of school level and district level winners.
Several students were selected to read their Red Ribbon essays. They were Marlene
Michel of Bullitt East High School, Rachel Lagermann of Old Mill Elementary School and
Albany Thompson of Roby Elementary School.
The Hebron Middle School choir performed Can You Hear under the direction of music
teacher Julia McKay.
Mt. Washington Middle School students were showcased in two special video
performances, Respect Yourself, Be Drug Free and You’re Not Alone.
DARE Officers and School Resource Officers were recognized for their work. DARE
officers include Bullitt County Sheriff Deputy Bruce Rucker, Shepherdsville Police Officer
Ken Bernardi and Dave Smith, and Mt. Washington Police Officers Scott Barrow and Brian
Denton. Additional SRO’s are Ray Page of Shepherdsville Police and Bullitt County
Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Cook.

Middle school Red Ribbon bullying writing contest winners are Mattie Philpot of
Bernheim; Lille Feldhaus of Mt. Washington; and Jacob Thixton of Zoneton. The district
winner is Jacob Thixton of Zoneton.
Middle school Red Ribbon bullying video contest winners are Emily Williams, Aubrey

Mt. Washington.
The school and district winners for Red Ribbon high schools video are Lucas Rogers,
Austin Trammell, Zach Rogers, Cassandra Davis, Cameron Keehn and Nathan
Luttrell of North Bullitt.
Bullitt County Public Schools has over 13,200 students in grades preschool through 12.
There are 25 school facilities, a certified staff of over 900 and a classified staff of over 800
working to make the district the leader in educational excellence.
